Assistant professor and Chair of the Clara Luper Department of African American Studies Dr. Karlos Hill discusses the importance of Juneteenth, and the impact of the day becoming a federal holiday.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, short for June 19th and also known as Emancipation Day, commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops' arrival came two-and-a-half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Celebrations broke out among the 250,000 newly freed black people in Texas, and Juneteenth was born. That December, slavery in America was formally abolished with the adoption of the 13th Amendment.
Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17th, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
How It's Celebrated
Today, Juneteenth celebrations continue to be held throughout the country, often involving events such as picnics, barbecues, church ceremonies, parades, concerts and more.
Why It's Important
Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures. As it takes on a more national, symbolic and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all of the roots tie back to this fertile soil from which a national day of pride is growing.
