NORMAN — Oklahoma senior Martina Capurro has been named the Central Region Most Improved Senior, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday morning.
Capurro has compiled a 50-31 overall singles record in just three years of eligibility and a shortened season her junior year due to COVID. In 2021, Capurro has compiled an 11-8 record playing between courts two, three and four, including a 5-3 mark in conference matches. She closed out the regular season on a five-match winning streak. Her 11-8 record in 2021 is her best since 2019 (her last complete season), when she went 14-8.
Capurro missed the 2020 fall tournament slate because of travel restrictions that prevented her from leaving her home country of Argentina. She also had to sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA residency rules. Despite missing two full semesters of competition due to eligibility and COVID, plus half of the 2020 season due to COVID, Capurro has compiled a 50-31 career overall record in singles and a 48-10 record in doubles alongside Camila Romero. Romero and Capurro have amassed an .828 win percentage in their OU careers, and in 2019 were named to the All-Big 12 Doubles Second Team.
This is the second ITA Regional award for Capurro, was named the 2020 ITA Central Region Player to Watch. The senior also garnered second-team All-Big 12 honors in singles as well as the No. 4 position title.
