Sooners Down Denver, Advance

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Sooners advanced to the NCAA second round with a 4-1 win over Denver on Friday.

OU will face the winner between host Texas A&M and New Mexico tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT with a trip to the NCAA Team Championships in Orlando, Fla., on the line.

The Sooners gave up the doubles point, but bounced back with four singles wins.

Jake Van Emburgh and Alex Martinez came away with a win in doubles as they topped Mattia Ros and Peter Sallay 6-3 on court two. Elsewhere, Mason Beiler and Nathan Han fell to DU's Nicolas Cuesta and Ignacio Crespo 6-2 at the No. 3 line and Mark Mandlik and Max Stewart were defeated by James Davis and Matt Summers 7-6 (5) on court one, and Denver took the point.

Justin Schlageter was the first Sooner off the court in singles as he downed Cuesta 6-3, 6-3 on court five. Freshman Welsh Hotard was next, topping Crespo 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 line.

Beiler gave the Sooners a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ros on court two.

Han sealed the win with a victory on court four. The freshman took out Sallay 7-6 (8), 6-4 to secure the win for the Sooners.

When play was halted, No. 86 Van Emburgh trailed 4-2 in his third set with No. 99 James Davis at the top spot. Davis took the opener 6-1 before Van Emburgh rallied to take set two 6-4.

On court three, Martinez led 5-3 in the third set with Summers. The Sooner took the first set 6-0 before Summers won set two 7-6 (6).

OU will face the winner between Texas A&M and New Mexico tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT. The winner of that match will advance to the NCAA Team
Championships to be held May 17-28 in Orlando, Fla.
