NORMAN – University of Oklahoma pitcher
Jason Ruffcorn was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week and outfielder
Brett Squires was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Ruffcorn was phenomenal in an extended relief outing on Saturday to lead the Sooners to a 5-3, Bedlam series-clinching win over No. 18 Oklahoma State. The redshirt senior from Cedar Park, Texas, registered career highs of 10 strikeouts and 6.2 innings to earn the victory (his previous long outing was 3.2 innings). Typically the OU closer, Ruffcorn entered in the third inning and stayed in for the remainder of the game. He put an exclamation point on his outing by striking out the side in the ninth inning.
Squires homered in each game of Oklahoma's series against OSU, including the game-winner on Saturday. His two-run blast in the seventh inning provided the winning runs, taking the Sooners from a 3-2 deficit to a 4-3 lead. In OU's 16-2 series-opening victory Friday night in Stillwater, Squires went 4 for 6 as he hit an RBI single during OU's five-run third inning and led off the fifth with a home run. He also homered to lead off the second inning in Sunday's series finale at Mitchell Park.
This is the first Big 12 weekly honor of the season for both Ruffcorn and Squires. It is the second career Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor for Ruffcorn.
Oklahoma plays a non-conference game against Texas Tech on Tuesday in Amarillo, Texas. Game time is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
