Sooners Add Sleeth for 2021

May 20, 2021 | Women's Tennis

NORMAN – Oklahoma women's tennis head coach Audra Cohen announced addition of transfer Layne Sleeth Thursday.

Sleeth, who has spent the first two seasons of her career at Florida, will join the Sooners in August 2021 and have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

"Layne has already accomplished a lot in her young career. She was one of the best juniors in the world and a top collegiate player, but what is truly special about Layne is her room for growth," said Cohen.

"Her athleticism and fundamentals have helped her develop masterful defense and the next step in her game is to use those same skills to develop bigger weapons and offense."

At Florida, Sleeth was ranked as high as No. 54 in the ITA singles release and racked up several wins over ranked players, including then-No. 8 Anna Rogers of NC State in the fall of 2019.

In her first full collegiate dual match season in 2021, Sleeth compiled a 9-1 record with a 7-0 mark on court four. She went 2-0 against nationally-ranked opponents and all nine of her victories came in straight sets. She also went 7-0 in doubles with Ida Jarlskog at the No. 2 line and the duo picked up two ranked victories.

A Canadian national, Sleeth was the No. 2 player in her nation's U18 singles rankings and was a two-time member of the Canadian junior Fed Cup team. She reached a career-high 36 ITF ranking in both singles and doubles as a junior player.

Sleeth joins the Sooners after an historic season that saw the program rise as high as No. 21 in the ITA team rankings and a 15-7 record with seven wins over ranked opponents.
