Sooners Take Fourth at Big 12 Championship

NORMANĀ ā The Oklahoma rowing team took fourthĀ place at the 2021Ā Big 12 Championship, heldĀ on Walter E. Long Lake in Austin, Texas.
Ā Jessica Robinson and Breah McKay were named to the All-Big 12 Team.Ā
"It's been an unusual year full of challenges and I'm proud of the resiliency of this team," head coach Leeanne Crain said.Ā "They've faced every adverse circumstance with poise and determination and above all a willingness to work together through it all. Ā The Big 12 was strong this year with 3 teams consistently ranked in the top 10. Ā We look forward to getting back on track with the competitive standard we've set for the program and are excited to do the work in the off-season to reach those goals."
In the first race of the day, the 1V8 started off strong with a top-four finish.Ā The Sooners' boat crossed the finish line in 7:14.121Ā to place fourth behind Texas, Alabama and Tennessee, respectively. OU held on to narrowly beat K-State by three seconds, giving the Sooners the edge they needed to take fourth overall at the race.
The Oklahoma 2V8 just narrowly missed out on the second top-four finish of the day, placing fifth with a time of 7:31.346. A highly contested battle for fourth went to K-State as the Sooners finished just one second behind the Wildcats.
Oklahoma's 1V4 placed sixth with a time of 8:32.786 in the third race of the morning.Ā OU's 2V4 boat closed out the day with a sixth-place finish in a time of 8:38.406.
The Sooners totaled 91Ā points in the Big 12 team standings behind second-ranked Texas' 167Ā points, affiliate member Alabama's 141 and affiliate member Tennessee's 133. Kansas State (87), Kansas (77)Ā and West Virginia (51) rounded out the standings.Ā
In the automatic-qualifying scores, Texas claimed first with 42 points, followed by affiliate members Alabama with 34Ā points and Tennessee with 32. OU garnered 20 points followed by K-State (18), Kansas (14) and West Virginia (8).Ā With Texas earning the automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA Championships, the Sooners would need to be selected as an at-large team, which will be announced next week.
