OU Takes Series with Game Two Win

April 02, 2021 | Softball

NORMAN — The No. 1 Oklahoma softball team (27-0, 5-0) claimed the series over Kansas with a 6-2 victory in the second game of the series Friday evening at Marita Hynes Field.

Redshirt senior pitcher Giselle Juarez guided the Sooners to the win with a six-inning, nine strikeout performance that featured no walks, four hits and one run allowed.

Freshman Jayda Coleman continued to impress at the dish and on the base path with a 2-for-2 day with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Fellow freshman Tiare Jennings and sophomore Mackenzie Donihoo each batted in a pair of runs.

With the win, Oklahoma claimed its 56th consecutive Big 12 conference series. The Sooners have not lost a conference series since 2011 and have won 48 consecutive Big 12 regular season contests. OU also pushed its NCAA-best winning streak to 34 games.

Kansas (17-13, 1-4) got on the board first courtesy of a solo home run from Madison Hirsch in the top of the second before OU responded with three runs in the bottom frame of the inning. Following a walk to senior Lynnsie Elam, single from Coleman and fielder's choice to senior Taylon Snow to load the bases, senior Jana Johns registered a sacrifice-fly RBI to plate the first OU run. Donihoo recorded her first run batted in of the contest in the next at-bat for the Sooners, ripping a single through the left side to score Coleman. Jennings then brought Snow in on her first sac-fly RBI of the game to put OU up 3-1 after two.

Oklahoma put another three runs on the board in the fourth inning. The Sooners loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks before a bases-loaded walk to Donihoo plated Coleman. The next at-bat, Jennings registered her second sac-fly RBI of the game on a flyout to center, plating Snow.

Jocelyn Alo extended her program-record hit streak to 40 games with an RBI single in the fourth to close the OU scoring.

Coleman pushed her career best hit streak to 13 games and brought her team-best stolen base total to 12 on the year.

After surrendering a solo shot in the second inning, Juarez allowed just one more hit in her final four innings of work, including retiring the final 11 batters she faced. The Glendale, Ariz., native improved to 9-0 on the season with the win Friday.

Kansas got one run back in the seventh inning on a single to center from Cheyenne Hornbuckle before Macy McAdoo and Shannon Saile shut the door on the Jayhawks, combining to close the game for OU with Saile striking out the final batter.

The teams meet for the series finale Saturday at 1 p.m. CT. The game can be seen via SoonerSports.tv (subscription required) and heard on The Franchise (107.7 FM) in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app.
