NORMAN – No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team heads to Minneapolis, Minn. to compete at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Competition for the Sooners will begin at 1 p.m. CT Friday afternoon in Session I ofĀ the two NCAA Qualifier sessions. With aĀ top-three finish Friday, the Sooners will advance to the NCAA Finals Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m. CT.

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

No. 1 Oklahoma eyes its 13th national title in program history as it heads to MinneapolisĀ for the 2021 NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Minnesota. Friday will consist of two qualifying sessions, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. CT. The top three teams from each session will advance to Saturday's finals, as well as the top three all-around competitors and individual competitors not on a qualifying team.Ā 

The Sooners will compete in the firstĀ session Friday against No. 4 Nebraska, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 8 Illinois, No. 9 Navy and No. 12 William & Mary in the first session. The Sooners will compete against four of the five teams in their session for the first time in 2021 with the only opponent OU has faced in 2021 being No. 12 William & Mary (W, 403.700-384.900 on March 6).

Session II will consist of No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 Penn State, No 7. Iowa, No. 10 Minnesota and No. 12 Cal.

GOING FOR HISTORY

The Sooners have won twelve NCAA men's gymnastics championships with their most recent title coming in 2018, part of a run of four straight national titles under head coach Mark Williams.

With one more national title, OU head coach Mark Williams would top the coaching charts with a record 10 titles as head coach.

Gaining theĀ title this weekend, the Sooners would stand atop NCAA men's gymnastics history with a record 13 national titles, breaking the tie with Penn State for the most national titles.

SOONERS NO. 1 IN CGA STANDINGS

After the regular season and conference championshipsĀ of NCAA men's gymnastics competition, Oklahoma continues to hold the top spot in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) standings. The No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team won its ninth straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference title Saturday, April 3, beating No. 3 Stanford (411.550), No. 11 Cal (386.950) and No. 14 Air Force (388.350) with a score of 412.750 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Sooners hold the top team average (412.300) and hold a top three spot in five of six events. The Sooners rank first on floor exercise (70.788), second on still rings (68.313), vault (72.238), parallel bars (68.813) and high bar (66.150) and fourth on pommel horse (66.038).Ā 

Individually, one Sooner holds a top 10 spots in the all-around rankings, held by junior Spencer Goodell's 80.575, which is good for fifth.Ā 

On floor exercise, Sooners hold two of the top five spots in the CGA standings. Senior Gage Dyer ranks No. 1 with a 14.688. Junior Morgan Seyler ranks No. 2 at 14.513 NQA.

The Sooners hold two spots in the top 10 on pommel horse. Junior Vitaliy Guimaraes leads the team with a 13.663, good for fourth place. Freshman Zach Nunez holds the eight spot with a 13.600 NQA.

On still rings, the Sooners put up three in the top 10. Senior Matt Wenske leads the way with his 13.900 average that ranks fifth overall. With a 13.700, Guimaraes holds eighth, and junior Spencer Goodell follows right behind him in ninth with a 13.688.

The Sooners have two in the top-10 on vault. Senior Mason Menser is ranked sixth in the nation with a 14.600. Dyer holds the eight spot with a 14.538 vault NQA, and Wenske sits in the 12 spot with a 14.513.

Oklahoma put three gymnasts in the top 10 in the parallel bars ranks following week 12. Wenske (14.100) ranks fourth, while sophomore Alan Camillus (13.750) holds sixth. Sophomore Cesar Gracia (13.713) follows in eighth and Goodell (13.600) sits in 11th.

On the last event, high bar, two Sooners hold top-ten spots. Guimaraes holds the No. 2 spot with a 13.650 average and sophomore Jack Freeman finds himself in fourth with a 13.513.

LAST TIME OUT

OklahomaĀ won its ninth straight and 19th overall Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference title, beating No. 3 Stanford (411.550), No. 11 Cal (386.950) and No. 14 Air Force (388.350) April 4 with a score of 412.750 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Sooners won two events as a team and placed in the top three on five events.

The Sooners started the meet on floor and put up a 70.550, giving the team the event title. Junior Morgan Seyler set a career high score of 14.850 and was crowned the MPSF champion on floor exercise. Senior Gage Dyer was close behind with a 14.550, which put him in second place overall.Ā 

In the second rotation, the team posted a total of 65.750 on pommel horse. Junior Vitaliy Guimaraes put up a 13.650 and was followed by freshman Zach Nunez with a 13.600.

The team tallied a 69.250 on still rings in the third rotation of the day. Senior Matt Wenske and Seyler set career highs with respective scores of 14.100 and 13.900. Guimaraes tied his career-best score with a 14.100. Wenske and Guimaraes tied for third on the event overall.

In the fourth rotation, the Sooners produced a 72.400 on vault, good for the highest team score of the day for the Sooners. Dyer led the team with a 14.800, which set a season-best score and crowned him the MPSF vault champion. Wenske and senior Mason Menser put up 14.550 and 14.500, respectively.Ā 

OU moved to parallel bars for the fifth rotation of the day. The team tallied a 69.450, giving the Sooners the event title. Sophomore Alan Camillus put up a 14.100 and Guimaraes tallied a 13.950, both good for career-best scores. Wenske set his season high score at 14.300.

The Sooners closed the meet with a 65.350 on high bar and were paced by sophomore Jack Freeman. The sophomore put up a 13.500 and was closely followed by Guimaraes with a 13.400.Ā
