NORMAN – The College Gymnastics Association announced its nominees for the 2021 Specialist of the Year, Rookie of the Year and MVP over the past weekend. Among the nominees, three Sooners were recognized. Senior Gage Dyer was nominated for Specialist of the Year, freshman Zach Nunez for Rookie of the Year and junior Vitaliy Guimaraes for MVP. Senior Matt Wenske was announced a finalist for the Nissen Emery Award in March.
Team captain Gage Dyer helped lead the Sooners to their ninth straight MPSF Conference title April 3. Dyer tallied a 14.800 on vault at the MPSF Conference Championships, crowning him the champion, the tally was also good for a season-best score. The event title is his second of the season and his 14.800 improves his season high by 0.050.
Nunez had a strong start to his collegiate career this season, where he earned two event titles on pommel horse for the Sooners. Nunez continues to hold the team's season best score on pommel horse with a 14.000. While competing at the MPSF Conference Championship, Nunez helped the Sooners on pommel horse with a score of 13.600, putting him in fifth overall. Nunez also set career highs on vault (13.950), parallel bars (13.500) and high bar (13.150).
Guimaraes finished the regular season in the top 10 in the all-around and on three different events (PH, SR, HB). The Arvada, Colo., native was recognized as the MPSF Gymnast of the Week in week three of competition and won seven event titles in a span of three meets. Guimaraes holds the Sooners' individual season best scores in the all-around (82.900), still rings (14.100) and high bar (13.850), all good for career-best scores. In addition, Guimaraes' 13.900 on pommel horse and 13.800 on parallel bars this season also set his career high scores.
Team captain Matt Wenske has been a vital component for the Sooners' success this season. Wenske has competed all-around three times in 2021, bringing in scores that help lead the Sooners to an undefeated regular season. The Nissen Emery Award recognizes senior gymnasts with excellent achievement during their collegiate careers, as well as is an example of good sportsmanship and has the ability to maintain high scholarships throughout his career. Wenske was recently named to the 2021 Big 12 Academic At-Large team, as well as recognized as a MPSF All-Academic selection.
The CGA will announce the winners of all three awards on Thursday, April 15 during the annual CGA Banquet.
