April 10, 2021 | Men's Golf
BRYAN, Texas ā Entering the day seven shots back of Texas, the top-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team fired an even-par 288 to trim the deficit to three strokes with 18 holes left to play at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas on Saturday.Ā
The SoonersĀ (+2, 2nd) fired the second-lowest round of the day as only Baylor (+9, 4th) was under par in the second round. No. 5 Texas, who leads Oklahoma by three shots after 36 holes, fired a 4-over 292 at the par-72, 7,227-yard Traditions Golf Club.Ā Three Sooners sit inside the top 10 and seek to guide Oklahoma to its fourth win of the season in Sunday's final round.Ā
"Today was just a solid round of golf that gives us an opportunity to go have a chance tomorrow," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We know every single shot will matter as we are coming from behind, but this golf course doesn't give up much, and we'll need to go earn it tomorrow."
Oklahoma has dominated the field on long holes, scoring a field-best 8-over on par-four holes and 11-under on par-fives. The team's 119 pars also led the field after Saturday's second round.Ā
Garett Reband (-2, T4) was the only Sooner under par on Saturday, firing a 71 (-1) to match his opening-round score, which moved him to 2-under at the event and into a tie for fourth and four strokes off the lead. After sinking five birdies on Friday, the All-American tallied seven more on Saturday to lead the field with a total of 12 birdies thru 36 holes. With a strong round on Sunday afternoon, Reband will secure his 17th-straight top-15 finish at 54-hole events, a streak dating back to 2019.Ā
Trading spots with Reband on the leaderboard after 36 holes was fellow redshirt senior Quade Cummins (E, T8), who carded a 3-over 75 to grab a share of eighth moving into Sunday's final round. Cummins is one of nine players in the field to score par-or-better on par-four holes this weekend, leading the Sooners in that category. The All-American is also pacing the Sooners on par-three holes where he is 1-over.Ā
Patrick Welch (+2, T10) tallied two birdies on his last four holes to shoot up the leaderboard on Saturday and into the top 10 after firing an even-par 72. The junior Haskins watch list honoree leads the field with 29 pars over 36 holes, one more than teammate Logan McAllister.
McAllister, a junior from Oklahoma City, matched Welch with a 72 (E) on Saturday to move into 22nd. McAllister (+4, T22) played his first 12 holes bogey and birdie-free and tallied a pair of bogeys and birdies over his last six holes to close the day.Ā
Ben Lorenz (+4, T22), a freshman playing unattached, shares 22nd with McAllister after firing a 1-over 73 on Saturday. The Peoria, Ariz., product tallied four birdies over his last 10 holes, but a late double-bogey moved him out of the top 10.
Jonathan Brightwell (+5, T34) wrapped up the OU lineup with a 73 (+1) to sit in 34th entering the final day of play. The redshirt senior will need a solid final round to extend his streak of top-10 finishes to five on Sunday.Ā
No. 1 Oklahoma will tee off with No. 5 Texas and No. 12 Texas A&M at 9:20-10 a.m. on Sunday with the final group featuring Reband, Pierceson Coody (T2, Texas) and leader Sam Bennett (1st, Texas A&M).Ā
