Eleven Sooners Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

NORMAN — Eleven members of the top-ranked Oklahoma women's gymnastics team were named 2021 Academic All-Big 12 selections, the conference announced Wednesday.
Seniors Jordan Draper, Evy Schoepfer, Karrie Thomas, Anastasia Webb and Carly Woodard, juniors Emma LaPinta, Allie Stern and Olivia Trautman and sophomores Vanessa Deniz, Jenna Dunn and Ragan Smith all earned first-team recognition.
In each of head coach K.J. Kindler's 15 seasons at the helm of the OU program, at least five Sooners have received academic accolades from the Big 12. Kindler's teams have now earned a total of 124 such awards in her time at Oklahoma.
Overall, 39 Big 12 student-athletes earned the academic recognition this year, with 36 being placed on the first team and three on the second team. Iowa State paced the league with 13 selections, followed by 11 from OU, nine from West Virginia and six from affiliate member Denver.
The five-member senior class earned honors for the third year in a row, while LaPinta, Stern and Trautman earned honors for the second time. LaPinta was recognized with a 4.0 GPA.
Deniz, Dunn and Smith each earned honors for the first time in their careers. Both Deniz and Dunn held 4.0 GPAs.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
