NORMAN – After three weeks of NCAA men's gymnastics competition, Oklahoma holds the No. 1 ranking in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) standings and coaches poll.
The Sooners posted their third 400-plus team score of the season last Saturday in their 413.400-375.100 virtual win over No. 12 Army. OU holds the top team average (413.867) along with the top spots on five of six events. The Sooners rank first on floor exercise (70.617), pommel horse (67.383), still rings (67.883), vault (72.317) and parallel bars (68.450) and second on high bar (67.217).
Individually, Sooners hold two top-five spots in the all-around rankings, led by Vitaliy Guimaraes' 82.850 which puts him in third place. Fellow junior Spencer Goodell ranks fourth in the country with his 81.200 average while senior Matt Wenske (80.250) and junior Morgan Seyler (76.700) hold seventh and tenth, respectively.
On floor exercise, OU has the top three rankings in the CGA standings. Senior Gage Dyer holds No. 1 with his 14.850 average following his NCAA-best 14.950 performance on the event last Saturday. Guimaraes holds the runner-up spot with a 14.450 average while Seyler (14.400) ranks third.
OU holds three top-10 spots in the pommel horse standings, led by Guimaraes' 13.750 fourth-place standing. Freshman Zach Nunez, winner of two straight horse event titles, ranks sixth on the event with a 13.600 average while redshirt sophomore Braden Collier (13.550) holds seventh.
On still rings, three Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Goodell paces the Sooners with a sixth-place ranking and 13.717 average. Guimaraes (13.675) and Wenske (13.667) sit right behind Goodell at seventh and eight, respectively.
The Sooners have three more gymnasts in the top 10 on vault lead by Dyer and redshirt junior Mason Menser's share of fifth place with 14.533 averages. Wenske (14.517) holds seventh.
Oklahoma has the most gymnasts in the top 10 on one event in the parallel bars rankings. Wenske leads the way with his third-place spot, averaging a 14.175. Goodell and redshirt sophomore Cesar Gracia share fifth with averages of 13.667. Sophomores David Sandro (13.575) and Alan Camillus (13.550) rank eighth and ninth, respectively.
On the last event, high bar, three Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Guimaraes holds his fifth top-10 spot in the country with a 13.733 average that ranks second in the country. Sophomore Jack Freeman holds sixth on the event with a 13.517 average while Sandro (13.450) sits at eighth
The Sooners will take a break from NCAA competition for the month of February and return to competition March 6 for a scheduled visit to Williamsburg, Va., for a meet with William & Mary College.
Select OU gymnasts will take part in the USA Gymnastics meet, Winter Cup, held this year in Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 26-28. The meet showcases the top U.S. gymnasts in the country as they compete for national team spots.
