Sooners Showcase 2022 Routines in Intrasquad

December 10, 2021 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN – The 2021 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team took the floor and showcased their 2022 routines at their annual intrasquad Friday night at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center.

In a live meet setting with two judges per event, the Sooners previewed their new routines and skills on all four events. Sophomores Audrey Davis and Katherine LeVasseur and freshman Jordan Bowers competed in the all-around with at least seven Sooners competing on each apparatus.

"Well first of all, it is so fun to put an Oklahoma leotard on for the first time," head coach K.J. Kindler said.  "Each class selected their own leotard tonight and so they got to pick what they wore, and they were excited just to put that on for the first time as freshman. That is a big moment. I know it is just in our gym, but Sooner fans come out, especially the most dedicated ones. We saw tons of alumni in the crowed. It is almost more difficult to compete at this intrasquad than it is at a competition, because there are people everywhere, all over everything. They are four feet from where you compete and that is very intimidating at times. I think when you go to competitions the fans are so much further away. This really prepares them from a nerves standpoint and a pressure standpoint. Competing for the Sooners is no easy task. There is high expectation, and they know it, so getting this first one under their belt is huge."

The Sooners started the night on vault with three new faces showing off for the first time. Bowers, Fletcher and Ramsey all made their debuts with Bowers showcasing a strong 1.5. Audrey Lynn, returning from a season ending injury in 2021, competed her pike front half.

"Starting on vault, lots of newcomers, so lots of exciting things to see," Kindler said. "One thing I was really excited about, Audrey Lynn returning to the lineup. Last year she was in the first meet of the year and won vault and then was sidelined the rest of the year, so she's coming off recovering from an injury and right back where she was last year, so super excited to have her back in the swing of things. You saw some great new things from Danae Fletcher, Sheridan Ramsey, and then of course Jordan Bowers bringing up the anchor spot on vault as a freshman, so that's really hard to do. Really great vaults, definitely have a couple people that aren't quite in there yet and excited to see them join the line-up as soon as possible."

On bars, the Sooners returned the most depth from 2021 with just two new athletes in the lineup. Karrie Thomas returned to the lineup and nailed her double layout dismount in her first routine since injury in 2021. Davis showed off an upgraded dismount, adding a half twist to her double front and LeVasseur debuted a new release.

I noticed in warm-up we were missing a lot of landings and I thought we were much stronger in the meet really going after our landings," Kindler said. "Bars is by far our strongest event this year. We have seven single-bar releases of those seven people that competed today. All dismounts, super dynamic on bars, extremely clean. This is definitely our event. We should be ranked in the top of the country on this event, no doubt about it."

Beam was full of familiar faces with Jenna Dunn, Carly Woodard, Ragan Smith, Davis and Thomas all competing. LeVasseur and Bowers were the new faces to the lineup and showed off strong routines. Thomas competed her dismount for the first time since being injured on the event and nailed the landing.

"Beam is what you would expect for the first meet of the year," Kindler said. "A little bit of jitters and nerves being worked up, but very aggressive performances and that was the No. 1 thing I asked — they be really aggressive and that if there is a mistake it is an aggressive mistake. I think we definitely accomplished that tonight. Really strong aggressive performances and really excited to see Karrie Thomas out there. After her injury at Alabama last year, this is the first time she has competed that routine and that dismount she had an issue with at regionals last year and absolutely killed it. Very excited about that. Ragan Smith was stellar as well."

Several new faces made an appearance on floor in Davis, Fletcher, Bowers and LeVasseur. Emma LaPinta was the senior leader in the rotation and her confidence showed in her now routine. Davis led things off with a stunning performance while Bell Johnson showed off an upgraded three-pass routine.

"Floor was great," Kindler said. "This is the first time people are doing all-around, so we had three all-arounders in there who were doing all four events. They haven't done that even in practice. We very often do three events a day, so Jordan Bowers, Audrey Davis, Kat, all of them doing four events for the first time. Floor being last, this really shows if your stamina is where it needs to be, and we saw we definitely have some more work to do there. Really, really good and exciting performances. A lot of people, too, Audrey and Kat not having competed, so a lot of new faces out there."

The Sooners will have exciting matchups in the LNC in 2022, including the season opener on Sunday, Jan. 9, as they welcome Alabama to Norman. The Sooners and Crimson Tide faced off twice in 2021 with OU defeating Alabama at the Tuscaloosa Regional and handing the Tide their first home regional loss in program history.

The most anticipated matchup of the 2022 season will take place inside Lloyd Noble Center when the 2021 NCAA Champion Michigan Wolverines come to Norman. In a rematch of the 2021 NCAA Championships, the Sooners and Wolverines will face off on Friday, March 4. In a rematch of the 2021 Big 12 Championship, defending champion Denver will return to the LNC on Sunday, Jan. 30. Other home meets include a Feb. 4 matchup with Texas Woman's University and a Feb. 11 meet against George Washington.
