Madi Williams Named to Naismith Award Watch List

November 09, 2021 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN — Oklahoma women's basketball senior forward Madi Williams was named to the preseason watch list for the Jersey Mike's Naismith Women's College Player of the Year Trophy, it was announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club Wednesday.

It marks Williams', a unanimous All-Big 12 preseason selection, third accolade of the preseason as she was named to the watch list for the Cheryl Miller Award, in addition to the preseason All-Big 12 team.

"Madi is such a special player," first-year head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. "She can do everything at such a high level and that separates her from so many others. Her leadership skills are uncanny and she is such a great teammate. To be named to this Naismith Watch List is just the first step in her journey this year."

The Fort Worth, Texas, product led the Sooners with 20 points per game as a junior in 2020-21, earning a selection to the All-Big 12 Team last season. She became the 38th Sooner ever to hit the 1,000-point mark in her career, joining teammates Taylor Robertson and Ana Llanusa, who both crossed that threshold two seasons ago. The senior has amassed 14 double-doubles throughout her career in Norman and set Oklahoma's single-game points record last season when she scored 45 vs. West Virginia on Jan. 3. Williams gets the job done on both ends of the floor, and led the Sooners in points, rebounds, steals and blocks per game last season.

Williams and the Sooners tip off the season tonight at South Dakota, who is receiving votes in the AP Poll and owns a 20-game home winning streak. Oklahoma then opens its home slate on Nov. 12 when it hosts Arkansas State at 10:30 a.m. inside the Lloyd Noble Center.

Season tickets, along with single-game tickets and mini-plans are available for purchase now for the season. To reserve your seat, click here or contact the OU Athletics Ticket Office by phone at (800) 456-4668.
