Wrestling Claims Three Titles at MSU Open

November 06, 2021 | Wrestling

EAST LANSING, Mich.Joey Prata, Tony Madrigal and Jake Woodley each claimed titles and Oklahoma wrestling had three other finalists in the Sooners' season opener at the Michigan State Open on Saturday.

It was a strong showing for the preseason No. 16 Sooners, led by head coach Lou Rosselli, to open the season. Powered by six finalists in the 10 weight classes, the Sooners finished the day with a 38-23 record against a field that included three other top-25 teams.

"We had a good day," Rosselli said. "We have some areas we need to improve on, but it was a great start to the season."

Prata, in his first action as a Sooner, claimed the 125-pound title after winning all of his matches by three or less points. He beat Illinois' Justin Cardani, the No. 22-ranked 125-pounder, in overtime to advance to the final where he knocked off Central Michigan's Brock Bergelin via 4-3 decision.

"I think Joey Prata had a great day," said Rosselli. "His effort is incredible. I loved his grit."

The next title win for the Sooners came immediately after Prata's victory, as Madrigal won his team-high fifth match of the day in a 4-3 decision over Michigan State's Rayvon Foley. But the toughest test of the day came in the semifinal for the Oak Park, Ill., product when he met up with Illinois' Lucas Byrd, who entered the day ranked fifth at 133 pounds. Madrigal pushed the semifinal into overtime where he used a takedown in the first sudden-victory period to move into the final.

"I was impressed with Tony today," Rosselli said. "He is doing a good job with his weight, and he is training really hard."

Woodley brought home the third title for the Sooners in dramatic fashion at 197 pounds. He held a one-point lead going into the third and would start the period on top. His opponent, Michigan's Patrick Brucki, the No. 8 197-pound wrestler in the country, scored a reversal to take a lead but before he could earn a riding-time advantage, Woodley escaped to force overtime, where he claimed the title in the first OT period.

Woodley defeated the eighth and 12th-ranked wrestlers in his weight class on his way to the title. It was his second career title at the Michigan State Open.

"Jake had a nice tournament today, beating a couple of studs," said Rosselli. "He works hard for his points and is doing a great job in all positions."

Mitch Moore, Anthony Mantanona and Josh Heindselman wrestled their way into the finals in their weight classes Saturday but all walked away with runner-up finishes.

Moore enjoyed success on the day before having to withdraw from his finals match due to injury. Moore won three of his five matches via fall with two of them coming within the first 0:21 seconds of the dual. He registered two of the three fastest falls among all classes on the day, and another win was an 18-2 tech fall in the second round.

Mantanona had an impressive day himself leading up to his final match. He won his first match by six, won via tech fall (18-3) in the second round and held a 10-0 advantage in the third round before his opponent had to medically forfeit.

Heindselman, OU's heavyweight wrestler, won his first match with a pin, which was the second of his career. He won his next match in sudden victory before eventually falling short in the finals.

Darrien Roberts fought through the consolation bracket to earn a third-place finish in the 184-pound weight class. Roberts got all the way to the semifinals of the championship bracket before losing to Northern Illinois's Britt Wilson, who ended up winning the title. The junior from Bethlehem, Pa., rebounded to win the rest of his matches to take third place.

The other competitor for the Sooners at 125 was redshirt freshman Jack Creamer, who lost a pair of close matches in his collegiate debut. Oklahoma's two other entries at 133 were Gabe Vidlak and Caleb Tanner, both of whom went 1-2 on the day and lost to guys Madrigal would end up beating later. Tanner lost his final match via injury default.

Jacob Butler and Zack Zeamer competed for the Sooners in the 141-pound weight class. Butler won his first match in a 5-4 decision over Ohio State's Dylan D'Emilio, an NCAA qualifier last season, but lost his next two. Zeamer won both of his matches in extra periods against wrestlers from Northern Illinois.

Willie McDougald wrestled alongside Mitch Moore in the 149-pound division and went 3-2 on the day. But he came up just one match short of the third-place bout in that weight class.

At 165, Troy Mantanona started his year in a strong way by pinning his first opponent in 2:35. He would go 2-2 in the tournament, eventually losing to Central Michigan's Tracy Hubbard.

In the 184-pound weight class, the third-place match was one bout away from being a matchup between Sooners. Carson Berryhill and Eli Joseph wrestled in that bracket along with Roberts. Berryhill won two matches in the consolation bracket after losing his first and ended up coming up one win shy of meeting Roberts in the third-place match. He would wrestle for fifth place and lose a tight contest 3-2 to Ben Cushman of Central Michigan. Berryhill also hit one of the more exciting moves of the day when he rode a reversal into a pin of Northwestern's Jack Jessen while trailing in the first period.

The Sooners hit the road once again next weekend when they travel to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers in their first Big 12 action as the reigning league champions Saturday, Nov. 13. Oklahoma's next tournament action will come at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas on Dec 3-4.
