NORMAN – For the first time since its 10-year reunion a decade ago, members of the 2002 Oklahoma Women's Basketball team that made a run to the Final Four are set to reconvene on the same court they played on 20 years ago. They'll be recognized during OU Women's Basketball's Alumni Weekend when former OU players will return to Norman in droves.
The reunion is slated for Feb. 25-26, 2022, in Norman, as the University of Oklahoma and head women's basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk will welcome the team and staff back to honor and celebrate their historic season. The Sooners are scheduled to play Kansas State at Lloyd Noble Center Feb. 26.
"We cannot wait to bring back the 2002 Final Four team," Baranczyk said. "They created an incredible foundation for this program. We're looking forward to being able to bring these amazing women home to honor and celebrate them!"
The 2002 Sooners compiled a 32-4 record en route to the program's first Final Four. Led by Hall of Fame coach Sherri Coale, who retired following the 2020-21 season, Oklahoma won both the Big 12 Conference's regular season and tournament titles, earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Sooners knocked off 16th-seeded Hartford in the first round and ninth-seeded Villanova in the second round. Then, wins over Texas Tech and Colorado in the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight powered the Crimson and Cream into the Final Four in San Antonio. In the semifinal, the Sooners knocked off No. 1-seeded Duke 86-71 to earn the program's only NCAA championship game berth in school history. The Sooners fell short in the title game to Connecticut, but the team's record-breaking campaign etched its name into the OU annals.
That Oklahoma team was powered by All-American and two-time Big 12 Player of the Year Stacey Dales, who averaged 17.0 points per game, along with 5.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Three other Sooners joined Dales on the All-Conference team. LaNeishea Caufield took home second-team honors, while Caton Hill and Rosalind Ross claimed third-team selections. In addition, freshman point guard Dionnah Jackson was named to the Big 12's All-Tournament team after helping the Sooners past Baylor in the final.
The team will be honored during the Kansas State game, and fans are encouraged to buy tickets through SoonerSports.com/BuyTickets.
The Sooners are 2-0 on the season after defeating South Dakota on the road to open the year and then beating Arkansas State in the team's home opener a few days later. The team returns to the court Nov. 16 when it hosts Central Arkansas.
