Colonial Collegiate Invitational

Oklahoma Grabs Second at Colonial
October 05, 2021 | Men's Golf
FORT WORTH – The Oklahoma men's golf team was the only team to place three golfers inside the leaderboard's top 10, but came up one stroke short of No. 12 Stanford at the 54-hole Colonial Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday, finishing as the runner-up to the Cardinal.
The top-three finish marks the program's 12th straight in regular-season tournaments, and 23rd in 24 in such events dating back to October 2018. More impressively, it's Oklahoma's 40th top-three placement in four seasons, the best stretch in program history.
"It was a great week on a historical golf course," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We played well this week and just got beat by a very good Stanford team that played unbelievable today."
No. 1 Oklahoma entered the day two shots back of Pepperdine, but quickly erased the deficit as Jaxon Dowell and Chris Gotterup both birdied the first hole moving the Crimson and Cream into first. Stanford (-3, 837), who signed for a tournament-low 269 (-11) Tuesday, throttled up the leaderboard to match the Sooners atop the leaderboard and eventually take a lead. OU's lineup, down one shot coming down the stretch, found birdies on the 12th, 14th, 15th and 17th holes, but a seven-foot birdie putt from Dowell on the 18th green wouldn't fall, leaving the Sooners one shot back to close the week at Colonial Country Club.
Chris Gotterup and Logan McAllister shared third, marking the first time in seven events that OU teammates earned top-five finishes in the same tournament. Jaxon Dowell rallied for an even-par 70 Tuesday to finish tied for seventh in his collegiate debut, powering the Sooners to their second runner-up finish of the year.
"Jaxon (Dowell) started his career off very nicely and did everything he possibly could to help us have a chance," Hybl added. "Logan (McAllister) and Chris (Gotterup) continue to lead us and they're competing at such a high level. I can't go without mentioning Drew's (Goodman) great first round as well, and we know that as a freshman he'll continue to be good for us moving forward."
Gotterup (T3, -3) put together another strong run of play, firing 68-71-68 at the par-70 course en route to his second consecutive third-place finish. The redshirt senior led Oklahoma in scoring on par-4s and par-5s, tallying a 7-under mark on such holes, pushing him into the 11th top-five placement of his career.
Defending Colonial Collegiate champion Logan McAllister (T3, -3) fired a team-low 65 (-5) Tuesday after opening the tournament with back-to-back 71s to move up 15 spots in the final round, securing his seventh top-five finish as a Sooner. His 37 pars paced OU on the week and were good for eighth-most in the field.
After posting a 67 (-3) and 72 (+2) Monday, redshirt freshman Jaxon Dowell (T7, -1) used an even-par 70 to close his collegiate debut in a tie for seventh in a crowded field.
Drew Goodman (T41, +9) and Patrick Welch (70, +17) closed the Sooners lineup at Colonial. Goodman, a true freshman, signed for a counting score of 67 in Monday's opening round and Patrick Welch added a counting 72 (+2) Tuesday for the Sooners.
The top-ranked Sooners travel south to Hockley, Texas, for the third annual Big 12 Match Play Championship, set for Oct. 11-13 at the Golf Club of Houston Oaks. Hybl's team finished second at last year's championship,
