NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball passed its first test of the season with flying colors Sunday afternoon, defeating Rogers State 93-23 in an exhibition at Lloyd Noble Center.
Four Sooners landed in double figures, powering Oklahoma to runs of 39-2 and 21-4 to put the game out of reach.
Ana Llanusa and
Madi Williams poured in 16 points each, and
Skylar Vann added 12 while
Kennady Tucker tallied 10 in the win.
"Today was just awesome because we finally got to play a game," Baranczyk said. "It's awesome to be able to run out of that tunnel and get to play in front of our fans. I thought we had so much balance today and did great."
The Sooners scored early and often, outscoring the Hillcats 27-7 in the first quarter behind nine points from Llanusa in her return to the court after missing the 2020-21 season due to injury. Williams and
Taylor Robertson combined for 11 more in the opening frame as Baranczyk's squad opened a significant lead.
"It was great to get
Ana Llanusa back," Baranczyk added. "She plays with such a spark and so much energy, and it was cool to see her running down the tunnel. We get to see it in practice, but for her to do it when the game lights are on is really fun."
The Oklahoma lead was extended even further in the first half behind a 39-2 run that stretched from the 5:12 mark of the first quarter until the 7:30 mark of the third. As a result, the Sooners entered the break with a commanding 50-9 lead. OU shot a blistering 63.3 percent in the half, including 43 percent from three, all while holding RSU to 4-for-35 (.114) from the field in the first half.
A strong third quarter saw the Sooners outscore the Hillcats 24-7, powered by a balanced attack where nine Sooners scored. OU used another dominant 21-4 run in the late third and early fourth quarters to extend its lead.
Freshman point guard and Norman native
Kelbie Washington earned the start and dished out seven assists, matching
Nevaeh Tot for a game high, while adding four points and three boards.
Taylor Robertson tallied nine points on 2-for-4 shooting and grabbed four rebounds in 19 minutes played. Freshman
Emma Svoboda collected a team-high eight rebounds and registered a blocked shot in a winning effort.
As a team, the Sooners were 36-for-64 (.563) from the floor and held Rogers State to just 9-for-68 (.132) on the afternoon. OU nearly doubled up the Hillcats on the glass, claiming a 60-31 advantage in the win.
Baranczyk and the Sooners will open their regular season on the road Nov. 9 at South Dakota, a team that made the NCAA Tournament last season. Following that contest, OU returns to Norman for its home opener Nov. 12 at 10:30 a.m. vs. Arkansas State.
