NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team returns to the floor Saturday afternoon in Norman for their first virtual competition of the 2021 season vs. Army at 3 p.m. CT.
No. 1 Oklahoma returns to the floor Saturday for its first virtual meet of the 2021 season versus No. 8 Army. The Sooners will compete inside McCasland Field House while the Black Knights compete inside their home gym in West Point, N.Y. The meet will be held via the virtual platform, Virtius, which partnered with the NCAA and College Gymnastics Association to showcase men's gymnastics for the 2021 season.
Virtius will offer a free public livestream via their website. The platform features an in-depth interface that shows both teams competing on each event, alternating gymnasts on every event and detailed scoring for each team. Judging will also be conducted remotely. Fans can access the viewing link here and will be prompted to enter a log in code (PEvQ6AddE1) to access the meet.
Oklahoma will once again be utilizing a pass-list only attendance policy inside McCasland Field House due to COVID-19 precautions.
Due to limited seating capacity related to COVID-19 protocols, OU will not sell season or single-meet tickets to the Sooners' home meets at McCasland Field House. Home and visitor student-athletes will receive a limited number of complimentary tickets on a pass-list basis.
The No. 1 ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics team cruised by the No. 4 Air Force Falcons on Saturday night inside McCasland Field House by a score of 413.750-374.400. Oklahoma won every event as a team and Sooners claimed each individual event title, including junior Morgan Seyler claiming the all-around crown.
With the victory, the program extended its exceptional win streak inside the Field House to 75, winning every meet inside the historic venue since 2007.
After the second week of NCAA men's gymnastics competition, Oklahoma holds the top spot in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) standings and CGA Coaches Poll.
The Sooners posted the top score of the early season on opening weekend at the Rocky Mountain Open over Air Force and Arizona State, putting up a 414.450. The team followed up its season-opening performance with a 413.750 showing last weekend vs. AFA inside McCasland Field House in Norman.
OU holds the top team average (414.100) along with the top spots on five of six events. The Sooners rank first on floor exercise (70.275), pommel horse (67.150), still rings (68.275), vault (72.300) and parallel bars (68.650) and second on high bar (67.450).
Individually, Sooners hold three of the top six spots in the all-around rankings, led by junior Spencer Goodell's 81.250 score from the Rocky Mountain Open, which is good for third. Senior Matt Wenske holds fifth in the country after his 80.250 all-around effort at Air Force, while junior Morgan Seyler ranks sixth following his 76.700 performance last weekend at home.
On floor exercise, Sooners hold four top-10 spots in the CGA standings. Senior Gage Dyer holds No. 1 with a. NQA of 14.800 following his two victories on the event in the first two meets of the season. Seyler ranks third at 14.375, Wenske holds seventh (14.050), while freshman Jack Freeman ranks eighth (13.875).
OU holds two top-10 spots in the pommel horse standings, led by junior Vitaliy Guimaraes' fifth-place ranking and 13.675 NQA. Redshirt sophomore Braden Collier ranks ninth with a 13.550 average. Freshman Zach Nunez sits right outside the top-10 at 12th with a 13.400 average.
On still rings, five Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Wenske leads the way with his 13.850 average that ranks third overall, will Goodell and sophomore David Sandro sit in a tie for fifth with NQAs of 13.700. Sophomore Alan Camillus (13.600) and Guimaraes (13.550) rank eighth and tenth, respectively.
The Sooners have five representatives in the top 10 on vault. Goodell paces the Sooners in fourth with a 14.500 average, while redshirt junior Mason Menser (14.475) holds fifth, Dyer and Wenske share a tie for sixth at 14.425 and redshirt sophomore Josh Corona (14.350) ranks ninth.
Oklahoma has an exceptional seven top-10 spots in the parallel bars ranks following two weekends of competition. Sandro holds a tie for second with a 14.200 average, Wenske (14.150) and redshirt sophomore Cesar Gracia (13.775) rank fourth and fifth, respectively. Goodell holds the six spot with a 13.750 NQA, and Camillus (13.475), Guimaraes (13.450) and Vernyi (13.400) hold respective spots of eighth, ninth and tenth.
On the last event, high bar, five Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Guimaraes holds his fourth top-10 spot in the country with a 13.725 average that ranks second in the nation. Sandro ranks third with a 13.650 average, while sophomore Jack Freeman (13.575) and Dyer (13.300) sit at sixth and 10th, respectively.
University of Oklahoma men's gymnasts Morgan Seyler and Zach Nunez collected gymnast of the week honors following OU's home-opening victory over Air Force on Jan. 23.
The junior, Seyler, won Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Gymnast of the Week following his all-around victory on Saturday. Seyler put up a 76.700 to win the all-around crown by three points. The Flower Mound, Texas, native registered career bests on still rings (13.300) and high bar (13.100) and brought home a runner-up finish on floor exercise with a 14.300 routine.
Nunez, a freshman out of Cypress, Texas, claimed his first career "of the week" honor, winning College Gymnastics Association's Rookie of the Week following his strong performance against the Falcons. Nunez paced the OU squad on pommel horse in his first meet inside McCasland Field House, recording a career-best 13.750 to claim the event title. Nunez also chipped in a 13.150 on high bar, his first time competing the event for the Sooners.
The Sooners will take a break from NCAA competition for the month of February and return to competition March 6 for a scheduled visit to Williamsburg, Va., for a meet with William & Mary College.
Select OU gymnasts will take part in the USA Gymnastics meet, Winter Cup, held this year in Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 26-28. The meet showcases the top U.S. gymnasts in the country as they compete for national team spots.
