NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team opens its home slate on Saturday night in Norman at historic McCasland Field House with a matchup against the Air Force Falcons at 6 p.m. CT.
THE MEET
No. 1 Oklahoma returns to the floor Saturday evening for the 2021 home opener at McCasland Field House versus the United States Air Force Academy. The meet is available to watch via FOX Sports Oklahoma and FOX Sports Southeast at 6 p.m. CT, with delayed coverage on Fox Sports Southwest (1/24 at 9:30 a.m. CT). Oklahoma All-American and National Champion Steven Legendre along with SoonerSports.TV analyst Chad McKee will be on the call.
Due to limited seating capacity related to COVID-19 precautions, OU will not sell season or single-meet tickets to the Sooners' home meets at McCasland Field House. Home and visitor student-athletes will receive a limited number of complimentary tickets on a pass-list basis.
LAST TIME OUT
No. 2 Oklahoma raced past the No. 13 Air Force Falcons and Arizona State Sun Devils with a final tally of 414.450 to AFA's 384.100 and ASU's 371.750.
With the victory, the Sooners have won 21 of the past 22 Rocky Mountain Opens.
Junior Spencer Goodell claimed the all-around title with a career-best 81.250 and the Sooners brought home all six event titles and five of six individual event titles on the night.
SOOONERS NO. 1 IN CGA STANDINGS
After the first week of NCAA men's gymnastics competition, Oklahoma holds the top spot in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) standings.
The Sooners posted the top score of opening weekend in their Rocky Mountain Open victory over Air Force and Arizona State, putting up a 414.450. OU holds the top team average (414.450) along with the top spots on five of six events. The Sooners rank first on floor exercise (71.450), pommel horse (67.550), still rings (68.050), vault (71.400) and parallel bars (68.250) and second on high bar (67.750).
Individually, Sooners hold two of the top three spots in the all-around rankings, led by junior Spencer Goodell's 81.250 score from the Rocky Mountain Open, which is good for second. Senior Matt Wenske holds third in the country after his 80.250 all-around effort at Air Force.
On floor exercise, Sooners hold five of the top seven spots in the CGA standings. Senior Gage Dyer holds No. 1 after his event-winning 14.850 this past weekend. Junior Morgan Seyler ranks second at 14.450, sophomore Jack Freeman holds fifth (14.100), Matt Wenske sits at sixth (14.050) and Spencer Goodell ranks seventh (14.000).
OU holds four top-10 spots in the pommel horse standings, led by redshirt sophomore Braden Collier's 13.900 that is good for third place. Junior Vitaliy Guimaraes ranks fourth (13.750), Seyler (13.550) holds seventh while sophomore Alan Camillus sits at the ten spot (13.300).
On still rings, five Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Wenske leads the way with his 13.800 average that ranks third overall, will Goodell is right behind him in fourth (13.750). Guimaraes holds his second top-10 spot in the country on horse with a 13.550 average, while Camillus (13.500) and Collier (13.450) rank eighth and tenth, respectively.
The Sooners have their highest number of gymnasts in the top 10 on one event on vault, with six representatives. Seyler ranks fourth in the country with a 14.400 average, while redshirt junior Mason Menser makes his first top-10 appearance of the season at fifth (14.350). Dyer (14.250) holds sixth while Goodell and redshirt sophomore Josh Corona share the seven spot with 14.200 vaults. Wenske holds his third top-10 ranking in 10th with a 14.150 average.
Oklahoma put four gymnasts in the top 10 in the parallel bars ranks following opening weekend. Wenske (14.150) ranks third after his season-opening event title, while Goodell (13.800) holds fourth and Camillus and redshirt sophomore Cesar Gracia (13.600) share seventh.
On the last event, high bar, four Sooners find themselves in the top 10. Guimaraes holds his third top-10 spot in the country with a 13.800 average, sharing the third-place spot with Freeman. Gracia (13.600) and Gage Dyer (13.300) rank fifth and ninth, respectively.
GOODELL, DYER CLAIM GYMNAST OF THE WEEK HONORS
Junior Spencer Goodell and senior Gage Dyer each claimed a gymnast of the week honor for their performances over the weekend at the Rocky Mountain Open, the MPSF conference and College Gymnastics Association announced Tuesday.
The junior, Goodell, was named MPSF Gymnast of the Week following his all-around victory at the Rocky Mountain meet. Goodell won the title with a career-best 81.250 that ranks third nationally. The Tigard, Ore., native tied or bested his career highs on five of six events and finished in the top five on four events, including runner-up finishes on parallel bars (13.800) and still rings (13.750).
Dyer picked up CGA Event Specialist of the Week honors for his floor performance over the weekend. He showed his All-America status on floor exercise in the Sooners season-opening win over Air Force and Arizona State. The senior captain won the event title with a 14.850 routine that ranks first in the country by four-tenths. Additionally, Dyer took home top-five finishes on vault (14.250) and high bar (13.300), taking third and fifth, respectively.
UP NEXT
The Sooners will go head to head with Army next weekend at noon CT. The meet will be OU's first virtual meet of the 2021 season with NCAA men's gymnastics utilizing the virtual competition platform, Virtius, throughout this challenging year for scheduling/travel.
