The Year That Was: Wrestling

March 23, 2020 | Wrestling

The 2020 NCAA Wrestling Championships would have wrapped up last weekend if things had gone to plan. But sometimes things don't go to plan, as the NCAA canceled all championships to protect the safety and wellness of student-athletes. The OU wrestling team almost completed its season, and so we choose to look back at the milestones and accomplishments set by this year's Sooner squad.Ā

OU qualified six wrestlers for the NCAA Championships, marking the second time that a Lou Rosselli-led squad had six or more Sooners qualify for nationals. The six qualifications mean that the Sooners sent five or more to the national championships for the 27th straight season.Ā

The Sooners had three wrestlers reach the 10-win mark in dual action this season: Dom Demas, Justin Thomas and Anthony Mantanona. The three combined for a 31-5 record in Oklahoma's 12 duals.Ā

Senior Sooner Christian Moody became a four-time NCAA qualifier when he earned an auto-bid at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship in early March. Moody lost his first bout at the tournament, but sent on to win four straight matchesĀ to finish a career-best third at Big 12s. He pinned the final two opponents of his career.Ā

174-pounder Anthony Mantanona collected a team-high nine falls this season, including a stretch in November and December where he pinned five of his seven opponents. The redshirt sophomoreĀ earned the No. 2 seed at Big 12s and finish as conference runner-up.Ā

Oklahoma put up 35 team points in a dominant dual-win over Ohio on January 5.Ā The SoonersĀ took advantage ofĀ a trio of pins fromĀ Dom Demas,Ā Justin ThomasĀ andĀ Anthony MantanonaĀ andĀ victories from five more wrestlers to record the program's most dominant dual victory since Nov. 11, 2017, when it defeated Sacred Heart, 53-0.

Throughout the course of the season the Sooners had five wrestlers ranked in the top 25 of their respective weight classes: Tony Madrigal (133), Dom Demas (141), Justin Thomas (157), Anthony Mantanona (174) and Jake Woodley (197). All five of those Sooners are set to return to Norman next season after posting a combined record of 110-38 in 2019-20.Ā
