The Year That Was: Women's Basketball

March 23, 2020 | Women's Basketball

For the Oklahoma women's basketball team, the 2019-20 season was one of milestones. Over the course of the year, two players scored their 1,000th career points,Ā head coach Sherri Coale notched her 500th career victoryĀ and Taylor Robertson broke a host of records from beyond the 3-point line.Ā

The Sooners learned their season was to end just hours before tip at the Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship. As we shift our focus to the well-being of our communities and nation, we take a moment to reflect on all that was accomplished in the 30 games we were fortunate enough to play.Ā

1,000

Two Sooners scored their 1,000th career points during the season as junior Ana Llanusa achieved the feat on Feb. 5 against West Virginia and sophomore Taylor Robertson followed suit on March 7. Llanusa and Robertson became the 36th and 37th SoonersĀ to join OU's 1,000 points club. Robertson is just the third OU sophomore to do so, joining elite company with all-time leading scorers Courtney Paris (2,729) and Aaryn Ellenberg (2,328).Ā

30

Three Sooners had five performances of 30-plus points this season, the most of any team in the Big 12. Ana Llanusa scored 30 on Missouri State on Nov. 14, Gabby Gregory dropped 30 at Baylor on Feb. 22 (she was the only player to score 25 or more on the Lady Bears all year)Ā and Taylor Robertson tied for the most 30-plus-point performances by a Big 12 player with three (Nov. 30 at Wichita State,Ā 31 on Jan. 15 at West VirginiaĀ and 31 at Kansas on Feb. 2).

500

Head Coach Sherri Coale notched her 500th career victory on Feb. 2Ā when the Sooners won a comeback thriller at Kansas. Coale, who completed her 24th year at the helm for OU, is the winningest coach in program history at 501-282 (.639). She became the 80th coach in Division I women's basketball history to earnĀ 500 or more career wins.

8

Taylor Robertson set a school record by scoring 20 points or more in eight consecutive games from Dec. 7 to Jan. 15.

12

Forward Mandy Simpson dished 12 assists while pulling down 10 rebounds in the win at Kansas. The junior's 12 assists tied for the eighth-most in a single game in program history. Simpson became the first Sooner to tally 12 assists since Morgan Hook in 2013.

131

Taylor Robertson drained 131 3-pointers during the season to shatter the OU single-season record of 115 set by Aaryn Ellenberg in 2012-13). Robertson also broke the Big 12 single-season record of 122 that had stood since 2002 and became the first player in conference history to hit 100 or more 3-pointers in back-to-back seasons after draining 105 as a freshman in 2018-19.

3

Madi Williams caught in in-bounds lob from Tatum Veitenheimer and laid the ball into the basket with 1.8 seconds to lift the Sooners to a 77-75 Bedlam victory in Stillwater on Jan. 8. OU finished on a 16-1 run after it trailed 74-61 with 2:18 remaining in the game.

Taylor Robertson scored 31 points in that game — played on her birthday — with 25 of those coming in the second half and OT to lift OU.
