Sooners Finish Strong at Winter Cup

February 22, 2020 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN -Ā Past, present and future members of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics squad wrapped up competition at the 2020 Winter Cup Challenge finals on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nev. Day two of competition was highlighted by the addition ofĀ Colin VanĀ WicklenĀ to the U.S. Senior Men's National Team. TheĀ 2017 Oklahoma graduateĀ joins fellow OU post-grads Yul MoldauerĀ and Allan Bower on the national squad.Ā

VanĀ WicklenĀ claimed the high bar title (27.600) on his way to becoming the third Oklahoma gymnast to secure a spot on the 12-manĀ USMNTĀ senior roster. VanĀ WicklenĀ also finished in fourth place on still rings, scoring a 28.300, and completed Winter Cup action with the second-best two-day all-around score, a 164.600.Ā

"For Allan and Colin and Yul, who are now training outside the NCAA, they're professional athletes now, and this is what they're working for," said OU head coach Mark Williams. "(We're) hoping that this is the first step towards going to championships in the summer and moving on to the Olympic trials and having their best bid to try and make the Olympic team."

Saturday night's finalsĀ also saw junior Gage Dyer's event title on floor exercise and three more podium finishes from Bower andĀ Moldauer.

Dyer topped off his stellar weekend in Las Vegas with a first-place performance on floor exercise. Dyer's 14.650, combined with his 14.400 from day one, brought his two-day total to a meet-best 29.050. The junior claimed top-eight finishes in four events, tying for fourth place on vault (28.650), seventh place on parallel bars (27.050) and eighth on high bar (26.550). Dyer finished in fifth place of the two-day all-around standings with a 161.900.

"I'm thrilled for Gage," Williams explained. "He's a guy that, having not really been considered a strongĀ all-arounder,Ā had a great two days of competition ... He has really improved his weaker events to be in the field with the better guys, so I'm really pleased with that. Overall, I just feel like today was a better competition for almost all of the guys."

Moldauer, a 2019 OU alum, claimed the vault title with a 14.500 on Saturday night and a two-day total of 28.800.Ā MoldauerĀ addedĀ a third-place finishĀ on p-bars with a 28.200 andĀ tallied the bestĀ two-day all-around score at the meet, 165.900.

Also competing in Saturday's finals session was Bower, a 2017 graduate. Bower's best finish came on pommel horse with a second-place 29.000.

Redshirt junior Matt WenskeĀ competed in a trio of events on day two, while 2019 alumĀ Genki Suzuki saw action in two rotations.Ā Wenske'sĀ best performance of the night came on rings, tallying a 13.200. Suzuki notched a 13.350 on high bar and a 12.700 on pommel horse.Ā

A pair of 2021 Oklahoma signees also made appearancesĀ in Saturday night's finals in the junior division: Noah Giordano and Zachary Nunez. Nunez earned a pair of junior event titles, scoring a 27.050 on pommel horse and a 26.350 on parallel bars.Ā

With the addition of VanĀ WicklenĀ to the U.S. Senior Men's National Team, Oklahoma gymnasts occupy threeĀ of the 12 roster spots on the American squad.Ā MoldauerĀ and Bower secured their spots on Friday, tying for fifth in the 2020 Winter Cup all-around competition. The Sooners will remain on the roster at least through theĀ 2020 U.S.Ā Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, June 4-7.
The No. 3 Oklahoma gymnastics team returns to NCAA competition on Saturday, March 14, at 3 p.m. CTĀ for a home meet against Air Force at McCasland Field House in Norman.Ā Oklahoma will honor members of the United States Armed Forces for Military Appreciation Day at the meet.
