Bower, Moldauer Earn USMNT Spots on Day One at Winter Cup

NORMAN - Past and present members of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team completed the first day of competition at the 2020 Winter Cup in Las Vegas, Nev., on Thursday night.
Day one of the meet was highlighted by two former OU gymnasts claiming top-five finishes in the all-around competition of the senior division. 2019 graduate and Sooner captain Yul Moldauer and 2017 OU alum Allan Bower both tallied scores of 82.350 to retain their spots on the U.S. Men's Senior National Team and tie for fifth place in the all-around.
It was each gymnast's fourth time to finish in the all-around top six at the USA Gymnastics event, with Moldauer claiming first in 2017 and 2019 and fifth in 2016. Bower took third in 2017, fourth in 2018 and third in 2019. Colin Van Wicklen, also a 2017 OU graduate, just missed the automatic-qualifying top-six, tallying an 81.700 to take seventh in the all-around on day one.
"To finish in the top six and earn the automatic spots for the national team is great," said Oklahoma head coach Mark Williams. "It allows them to also qualify to the USA Championships as part of the first process for the selection to the Olympic team... We're proud to have those guys make the national team again."
Oklahoma junior Gage Dyer claimed the best finish among four current Sooners, finishing in 12th place with a score of 81.300. Dyer also finished day one tied for eighth in the 10-point results, safely advancing to Saturday night's Winter Cup finals session.
"It's really pretty amazing for Gage to be in the top-12 of the all-around for a kid that started gymnastics as late as he did," Williams explained. "I'm really impressed with his day. He really put it together."
Moldauer finished the session with top-10 marks on four events, notching a third-best 14.300 on vault, 14.200 for fourth on horse, a fifth-place 14.100 on p-bars and a 13.900 for ninth on rings. Bower posted his highest score of the meet on pommel horse, recording a second-place 14.550. Van Wicklen closed the night strong with a 13.950 on high bar, good for the third-best HB score of the day.
A fourth Sooner post-grad, 2019 alum Genki Suzuki, finished tied for 21st in the all-around (78.800) and will join Moldauer, Bower, Van Wicklen and Dyer in Sunday's finals. OU redshirt junior Matt Wenske (79.600) took 20th in the all-around and serves as the first reserve gymnast for Saturday's finals session. Freshman Jack Freeman (76.850) and junior Alexei Vernyi (74.700) took 28th and 33rd overall, falling short of the qualifying marks for the finals.
2020 OU signees Zachary Nunez (75.100) and Noah Giordano (74.800) competed in Friday morning's junior session all-around competition, recording respective finishes of 10th and 14th place. Nunez claimed the top scores on pommel horse (13.450) and p-bars (13.250), while Giordano earned top-six finishes on rings (13.050) and p-bars (12.950). Both future Sooners advance to Sunday's junior finals. Signee Daniel Simmons competed in five events, led by a 14.000 on vault.
Winter Cup action resumes Saturday night with the senior event finals and junior all-around and event finals beginning at 9:30 p.m. CT.
