Coach Kay Yow was passionate about uniting the nation of coaches, players and the women's basketball community to do something for the greater good that far exceeds wins and losses on the court. The Play4Kay campaign was born in 2007 and continues to grow as it raises funds to support women's cancer research. To date, the fund has allocated more than $5 million towards this goal.
Throughout her time at OU,
Sherri Coale and her staff have been innovators in terms of pushing the Play4Kay efforts forward. Each year, the Play4Kay game generates new excitement and celebrates the survivors that inspire us every day.
The Sooners hosted this year's Play4Kay event Sunday and honored cancer survivors, fighters and their families through a variety of means.
The 12 members of the Oklahoma women's basketball team independently gave $2,500 to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Over the course of the season, each player voluntarily contributed and the players presented their donation to the KYCF prior to Sunday's game.
The OU "Our Star" program also selected five cancer survivors from around the state for a VIP treatment prior to the game and honored this group along with over 300 others at the annual Survivors Celebration luncheon.
