Freshmen Shine As OU Tames Golden Lions

December 29, 2020 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – Led by outstanding performances from freshmen Nevaeh Tot and Skylar Vann, the Oklahoma women's basketball team put on a show at Lloyd Noble Center Tuesday night, trouncing Arkansas-Pine Bluff 107-64.

"Just a really good win tonight," said Oklahoma head coach Sherri Coale. "I thought [Taylor Robertson] was herself tonight … We just had really balanced scoring. I thought Gabby Gregory was super efficient and Madi [Williams] came on late to do what she does – sizing up defenders one-on-one.

We could've played better defensively. I think we made so many shots early that it was like we couldn't wait to get the ball back and we forgot that you've got to play defense first and get a stop, then you can have it back. So that's a learning lesson and an opportunity for improvement for our young team. But Nevaeh Tot and Skyler Vann - big night for the two freshmen."

Both Tot and Vann recorded double-doubles against the Golden Lions. Vann scored 14 points for a new career high and pulled down 10 rebounds, also a career best.

Tot put up 12 points to go with a career-high 11 assists, marking the first time a Sooner had a double-double with points and assists since Morgan Hook on Jan. 9, 2013 against TCU. Tot's 11 assists tie for the most by a Big 12 player in a single game in 2020-21 and the fourth-most in a Division I women's basketball game this season.

Three more players scored in double figures on the night as Taylor Robertson and Gabby Gregory each chipped in 23 points and Madi Williams added 19. Tuesday's contest marked the first time since 2017 that the Sooners scored 100 or more points in a game and had done so inside Lloyd Noble Center.

The Sooners shot 53.8% for the game and 46.9% from beyond the arc as OU hit 15 3-pointers in the contest with seven of those coming from Robertson.

Robertson's seven treys stand as the most in a single game by a Big 12 player this season and the fourth-most in a Division I women's basketball in 2020-21.

Mandy Simpson led all players in rebounding with 11 boards, good for her third performance with 10 or more rebounds this season. As a team, OU pulled down 54 boards.

OU came out firing, opening the game on a 15-0 run and holding UAPB scoreless for the four minutes of the contest. Tot racked up six assists and Robertson drained four 3-pointers on five attempts in the first quarter alone.

Oklahoma drained 10 3-pointers in the first half to match the program record for made 3s in a half that has stood since Feb. 25, 1998 against Kansas.  The Sooners took a 61-30 lead into the locker room, good for their largest halftime lead of the season.

OU kept the momentum rolling in the third quarter as it scored 36 points that period. The Sooners' 36 points were just one shy of matching the program record for most points in a quarter set last season against Missouri State on Nov. 14, 2019.

The Sooners kept a foot on the gas during the final period and reached the century mark on a Gregory layup. OU would go on to score seven more to close out the Golden Lions in record-breaking fashion.
