Sooners Close Strong, Finish Third at Maridoe
October 20, 2020 | Men's Golf
CARROLLTON, Texas āĀ The Oklahoma men's golf team fired a field-low 283 (-5) in the final round of the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday to claim third place in the Big 12 Fall Series' final event. For head coach Ryan Hybl's team, it marks the 16th top-five finish in itsĀ last 17 events.
The Sooners (888, +24) battled tough conditions at the par-72, 7,521-yard Maridoe Golf Club all week, but posted the second-lowest combined score of 577 (+1) over the final 36 holes to move from eighth to third place over the last two days.Ā
"Today was a very solid day on the golf course," Hybl said. "To have three guys under-par at Maridoe is a great accomplishment and to not count a score over par is a nice way to end the event."
Oklahoma was once again led by All-American Quade Cummins (220, +4) who shot a 71 (-1) to claim ninth at the event. The top-10 placement is the redshirt senior's 16th of his illustrious career and 23rd top-20 finish, as the Weatherford, Okla., product hasn't finished outside of the top 20 at a tournament since his junior season.
Following Cummins on the leaderboard was graduate transfer Jonathan Brightwell (222, +6), whose bogey-free round of 69 (-3) moved the All-American from 36th on the leaderboard to T13 on Tuesday. Brightwell's near-perfectĀ round was the only round among all competitors to conclude without a bogey.
"John's bogey-free round is just something that doesn't happen at Maridoe," Hybl added. "Really proud of him and the rest of the guys. Everyone did their job today which allowed us to finish strong."
In his Oklahoma debut, freshman Ben Lorenz finished T13 as an individual alongside fellow individual competitor, Thomas Johnson. The pair of Sooners combined for 18 birdies at the event, with each golfer collecting nine.
Logan McAllister tallied a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to finish his event with a 222 (+7) to grab a T17 placement. The Big 12 September Golfer of the Month has finished inside the top 20 in his last four events, with a pair of wins.
Junior Patrick Welch collected the ninth top-25 finish of his Oklahoma career, ending his tournament with a 72 (E) to finish T21 at 8-over. The Providence, R.I., product has been a rock in the Oklahoma lineup over the last three seasons as he owns a team-best -0.13 score versus par among Sooners with more than five events played.
Riley Casey (+16) concluded his first appearance in the Sooner lineup since his junior year with a 74 (+2), as the redshirt senior finished T45.
The No. 2-ranked Sooners now turn their attention to the prestigious East Lake Cup in Atlanta, Ga., set for Oct. 26-28. The East Lake Cup features the top-four teams in the country in an NCAA Championship-style event that combines stroke and match play to determine a champion. Hybl's team will be joined by No. 1 Pepperdine, No. 3 Texas Tech and No. 4 Texas, who finished in second, fifth and eighth, respectively at Maridoe.
