Sooner Duo Earn Big 12 Accolades

January 21, 2020 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN – Make it three straight weeks that senior Maggie Nichols and freshman Ragan Smith have earned weekly conference honors.

Nichols and Smith were named the Big 12 Gymnast and Newcomer of the Week, respectively, for the third time this season. The honor is the 21st of Nichols' career and third for Smith. Nichols also ties the record for most career Gymnast of the Week honors with 13 and is the first gymnast in Big 12 history to be named Gymnast of the Week for the first three weeks of the season.

The duo helped lead the Sooners to a pair of wins over top 20 teams in No. 9 Alabama and No. 19 Arkansas. In both meets, OU topped the 198 mark, posting a 198.250 against Alabama and a 198.175 against Arkansas. The Sooners are the only team to break 198 this season.

Nichols notched a pair of tens on the weekend, both coming on vault. She now has 19 career perfect 10s including seven on vault. Nichols posted at least a 9.9 in all eight routines she performed and tallied three scores of 9.975, two 9.95s and a 9.9. She also added an all-around score of 39.825 against No. 9 Alabama.

Nichols posted her second-highest career all-around score with a 39.900 against Arkansas. Days after being the first gymnast in 2020 to post a score of 39.800 or better, Nichols became the first gymnast this season to break 39.900. Nichols is the only gymnast to eclipse 39.900 since Courtney Kupets (Georgia) notched a 39.900 in 2009. Nichols has posted four scores of 39.900 or better with her highest being a 39.925 in 2017. She is the only gymnast in NCAA history with multiple scores of 39.900 or better.

Smith continued her hot streak on bars, notching a 9.95 at Alabama to take home the event title, before adding a 9.925 at home against Arkansas. Smith has yet to earn lower than a 9.925 on bars this season and ranks third in the nation on the event. In her home debut at the LNC, Smith added a 9.875 on beam along with a 9.875 on floor.

The Sooners are back in action Saturday as they head to Fort Worth, Texas, for the annual Metroplex Challenge. OU will face Alabama, Denver and Georgia in the podium quad meet beginning at 7 p.m. CT.
