TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ā The No. 1 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team became the first team in the nation to break 198, posting a 198.250-197.400 victory over No. 9 Alabama inside Coleman Coliseum Friday night.
It was a stellar night for senior Maggie Nichols as she posted her 18th career perfect 10 with a perfect score on vault. The Little Canada, Minn., native kept up her incredible night with a 9.95 on bars, a 9.975 on floor and a 9.9 on beam for a 39.825 in the all-around. Nichols now boasts the top all-around score in the nation and is the first to break 39.800 in 2020.
"Tonight was electric," Nichols said. "The team had so much energy walking in the building, we had so much fun in the locker room before we came out. We came out on bars with great routines and just had so much fun. After that, we knew we had that energy tonight. We kind of felt that spark and it was the first time I think we've felt that energy and that spark. Going to vault and coming out with a 10, it was amazing. I knew in the air I had a great block and I was going to land and stick it. Getting that perfect 10 never gets old."
With a 198.250, the Sooners now have 34 scores of 198 or higher in program history, with 27 since 2016. It's the 23rd score of 198 or higher to have come on the road or at a neutral site. OU has also posted a 197 or better in 63 of its last 64 meets and boasts a 29-meet streak reaching the mark.
The Sooners posted at least a 49.500 on all four events with a 49.625 on vault, 49.575 on bars, 49.500 on beam and 49.550 on floor.
