Sooners Meet Mountaineers Wednesday

NORMAN – OU heads to Morgantown, W.V. Wednesday for a road contest with the Mountaineers. The game will tip at 6 p.m. CT inside WVU Coliseum.

ON THE AIR

The contest will be broadcast on Nexstar stations in West Virginia with Lanny Frattare as play-by-play, Meg Bulgar as the color analyst and Amanda Mazey on the sidelines. In Norman and Oklahoma City, the game will air on KREF 99.3 FM/1400 AM in Norman and KOKC 1520 AM in Oklahoma City (Tune In Radio App) with Brian Brinkley on the call. 

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

•  The Oklahoma women's basketball team looks for its third straight Big 12 win Wednesday as OU heads to No. 17/17 West Virginia. The game will tip at 6 p.m. CT inside WVU Coliseum. The Sooners will also look to earn the edge in the all-time series, which is tied at nine games apiece.

•  In their last contest, the Sooners topped Iowa State 81-72 inside Lloyd Noble Center on Saturday behind a second-half spark from Taylor Robertson and Madi Williams. Robertson poured in 19 of her 22 points during the second half, while Williams scored 12 of her 19 after the break.

• With 22 points against Iowa State, Robertson notched her seventh consecutive game with 20+ points to become the outright school recordholder for most consecutive 20+-point performances. The record was previously held by her teammate Ana Llanusa, who had six straight in 2019.

•  Wednesday's contest will be a matchup between the Big 12's top two 3-point shooters. OU's Robertson leads the league with 78 made treys this season with an average 5.2 per game, while West Virginia's Kysre Gondrezick is second in made 3s with 35 and 2.50 per game.

•  Sophomore guard Robertson has become the NCAA's active career leader in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 47.7% (183-for-384), roughly halfway into second season of college basketball. She is also the active career leader in treys per game with a 4.07 average. Robertson is the youngest member of both 10-player lists; the nine other players on each are juniors and seniors.

GAME 14 RECAP: OU 77, OSU 75

The Sooners used a second-half spark to keep its Big 12 momentum going with an 81-72 win over Iowa State Saturday. After trailing at halftime, Taylor Robertson and Madi Williams poured in points in double figures to spur the offense.

Robertson scored 19 of her 22 points and Williams poured in 12 of her 19 in the second to boost OU the Sooners to victory. Williams showed off her range as she went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in her 19-point performance. The Fort Worth product also pulled down eight rebounds in the contest.

Freshman Gabby Gregory was again a double-digit contributor as she notched 16 points to go with seven rebounds.  Mandy Simpson had 12 points on the day and tied Williams for the team-high in rebounds with eight. The junior dished four assists on the day.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS

No. 17 West Virginia enters Wednesday's contest at 13-1 on the season and 3-0 against the Big 12.

In their last outing, the Mountaineers held off Texas 68-63 at home. Tynice Martin led al players with 23 points while Kysre Gondrezick chipped in 21. Kari Niblack pulled down 12 rebounds in the contest.

WVU's sole loss of the season came at the hands of Creighton, 82-75, at the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. Since then, the Mountaineers have won nine straight games.

Gondrezick leads the Mountaineers with 17.9 points per game and 4.1 rebounds. Martin joins Gondrezick with an average in double figures at 16.8 points per game.  

The Sooners have won the last two meetings in Morgantown. In last year's Feb. 23 contest, Ana Llanusa scored a game-high 26 points while Taylor Robertson chipped in 18 as OU shot 52.8% from the field. Robertson was 6-of-8 from beyond the arc as the Sooners shot 50.0% from deep.  Jessi Murcer filled the stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists and Nydia Lampkin led OU with 10 rebounds as the Sooners edged WVU 40-32 on the glass.

T-ROB TREY TRACKER

Sophomore Taylor Robertson has become the NCAA's active career leader in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 47.7% (183-for-384), roughly just halfway through her second season of college basketball. She is also the active career leader in treys per game with a 4.07 average; the next closest player, Rachel Childress of UAB, has averaged 3.29 per game. Robertson is the youngest member of both 10-player lists; the nine other players on each are juniors and seniors.

Robertson is the national leader in made 3s with 78 this season. The sophomore is shooting 49.0% (78-for-159) from deep.

The McPherson, Kan., product also leads the country in 3s per game (5.20) this season. She is averaging the most 3s per game of any player in men's or women's Division I basketball; Aaron Nesmith of Vanderbilt is the men's 3s per game leader and is averaging 4.29. Robertson is also averaging more 3s per game and a better 3-point field goal percentage (47.9%) than the leading NBA player; James Harden (Houston) accounts for 5.2 per game and is shooting 37.9% from deep.

Robertson leads the Big 12 in 3-pointers this season (78), more than double than the next closest player: West Virginia's Kysre Gondrezick has hit 35 this year. As a team, OU has made a league-high 137 3-pointers this season; Robertson accounts for more than half of those.

Of Robertson's 306 total points this season, 234 have come from behind the 3-point line. 46 have come from the charity stripe where she is 46-for-52 (88.5%); just 26 of Robertson's points have not been 3s or free throws.
Additionally, Robertson's nine made 3s at Wichita State tie for the third most in a single game in women's Division I basketball this season and are one shy of the men's 2019-20 Division I single game record of 10.

SHOOTERS SHOOT

OU has proven its prowess from long range this season with the Sooners shooting 39.8% (137-for-344) from beyond the arc, checking in at 2nd in the Big 12 and fifth nationally in that category.

With 128 made treys, the Sooners lead the conference in made 3-pointers by 26; the next closest team is Iowa State with 102 on a .339 clip.

Sharpshooter Taylor Robertson accounts for 78 of OU's 137 3-pointers this season – 56.9% of the Sooners' buckets from deep have come from Robertson.

The Sooners are 13th nationally in 3s per game with 9.1 and third in the Power Five in that category. Oklahoma ties Creighton for 19th nationally in total made 3s.
 

THAT'S OFFENSIVE

The OU scoring offense currently ranks third among Big 12 teams and 18th nationally as it averages 78.60 points per game.

OU ranks in the top five among Big 12 teams in five offensive categories. The Sooners are first in made 3-point field goals (137), 3-point field goals per game (9.13); second in 3-point field goal percentage (38.9%); third in scoring offense (78.60 points per game); and fourth in field goal percentage (44.1%).

Three Sooners average points in double figures. Taylor Robertson powers the OU offense with 20.4 points per game; Ana Llanusa accounts for 16.9; and Madi Williams averages 13.9. Robertson has scored in double figures in all but one game this season.

LUCKY 7

Sophomore Taylor Robertson has scored 20+ points in each of the Sooners' last seven games.

With her 22 points against Iowa State on Saturday, Robertson became the outright school recordholder for most consecutive 20+-point performances. The record was previously held by her teammate Ana Llanusa, who had six straight in 2019.

Prior to Llanusa, the record was most recently held by four-time All-American Courtney Paris, who had five straight games with 20+ in 2008.
Robertson, who ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring average (20.4 PPG), has led the Sooners in points in each of the last seven contests and in 11 games this season.
 

ANA APPROACHING 1,000

Junior guard Ana Llanusa is approaching 1,000 career points as she sits at 979 headed into Wednesday's game. As a freshman in 2017-18, Llanusa scored 377 across 30 games. Despite missing 10 games due to injury in 2018-19, Llanusa totaled 365 points. The Choctaw, Okla., native has scored 237 this season.

Llanusa will become the 36th member of OU's all-time 1,000-points club and the first since Maddie Manning (2012-18) achieved the feat in 2017-18 as a senior. Llanusa will also become the 17th OU player to reach 1,000 points in three seasons or fewer and the first to do so since Peyton Little in 2016-17.

DUNBAR JOINS WBB ROSTER

Ashlynn Dunbar, who was previously a member of the Oklahoma volleyball team, has joined the women's basketball squad. Dunbar will be immediately eligible to play for the Sooners and will have one remaining year of eligibility for the 2020-21 season.

A standout on the volleyball court, Dunbar joins the basketball roster after a wildly successful 2019-20 campaign as an outside hitter for the Sooners and coach Lindsey Gray-Walton. Dunbar was an All-Southwest Region and All-Big 12 First Team selection as she led the squad to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015.

The Seabrook, Texas, product played basketball at Clear Falls High School where she three-time First Team All-District and two-time First Team All-County honoree. Dunbar was also a three-time recipient of her district's Offensive Most Valuable Player award and was named the district's defensive MVP in 2014-15. As a senior in 2015-16, Dunbar was the McDonalds Classic Tournament MVP and a Greater Houston Area Girls Basketball Association All-Star.

Prior to her arrival in Norman in August 2019, Dunbar spent three years at San Diego State University, where she played volleyball.

QUICK HITS

  • OU wrapped up the non-conference slate at 7-5 overall, 6-1 at home, 0-3 on the road and 0-1 in neutral site contests.
     
  • OU is the only team in the Big 12 without a senior on its roster. The Sooners will be one of two league teams (Texas Tech) that will return three players who averaged at least 10.0 points per game. Llanusa (18.3), Robertson (14.3) and Williams (11.6) all averaged scoring in double figures during the 2018-19 season.
     
  • At 498-270 in her career, Coale is just two wins away from the 500th victory. Only 76 coaches have accumulated at least 500 wins in their careers in the history of Division I women's basketball.
