Sooners Celebrate 2019 National Championship

September 06, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN- The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team honored its own at its annual banquet Friday night. Along with celebrating the 2019 National Championship, the 2010 team was honored on the 10th anniversary of being the first OU team to make the NCAA Super Six.

The Sooners are coming off yet another national championship season. For the third time in the last four years, the Sooners were crowned the NCAA National Champions as they finished a perfect 32-0 season. En route to their fourth overall title, the Sooners won their 10th consecutive regional title, eighth consecutive Big 12 title and were ranked No. 1 for 14 straight weeks. For the third year in a row, at least two Sooners won an individual national title as Brenna Dowell (floor) and Maggie Nichols (vault, all-around) brought home three titles.

Dowell was awarded the Kelly Garrison Award, given to the most valuable athlete on the competition floor. After competing on just three events for her first three collegiate seasons, Dowell added beam to her repertoire and immediately excelled, winning six all-around titles during the regular season. Dowell was the 2019 Big 12 Gymnast of the Year, 2019 South Central Region Gymnast of the Year, an AAI Award Finalist and Honda Sport Award Finalist. She was the 2019 NCAA Co-Floor Champion, her second individual championship after earning a share of the vault title in 2018. Dowell was a three-time All-American and three-time All-Big 12 honoree in 2019.

Nichols was named the NCAA Tournament MVP for her incredible comeback performances at the NCAA Championship. Limited to two events for most of the season due to injury, Nichols returned to the all-around competition to help lead OU to its fourth national championship. She became just the sixth gymnast to repeat as the NCAA All-Around Champion and was crowned co-champion on vault. She was a five-time All-American and two-time regional champion (vault, bars). Nichols earned a 9.9 or better, including a meet-best 9.9625 on beam, on all eight of her NCAA Championships performances.

Nicole Lehrmann was named the Most Outstanding Gymnast after a phenomenal senior season. After upgrading her vault to a Yurchenko 1.5, Lehrmann had a breakout season on the event, notching a career-high of 9.95 and finishing the season with a 9.9 or better on the event in her final six meets. Lehrmann competed on vault, bars and beam at every meet in 2019, tallying a 9.9 or better on all three events in her final four meets. She recorded a perfect 10 on bars, her second perfect score of her career.

Jade Degouveia earned the Clutch Performance of the Year Award for her performance in the NCAA Finals. After a fall in the second spot on floor, it was all up to Degouveia to keep the Sooners' championship hopes alive. The senior came through, earning a 9.8875 and helping set up the final three gymnasts to post a team score of 49.650. Ā

Oliva Trautman was named the Freshman on the Year and the Most Consistent Gymnast after putting together an incredible first season as a Sooner. Trautman was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and finished her freshman season with first-team All-America honors on floor at the NCAA Championships. She became the fourth freshman in program history to record a perfect 10 on any event (floor at Perfect 10 Challenge). She finished the year ranked No. 2 on floor with an NQS of 9.965 as she posted at least a 9.925 on the event in every meet of the year.

Bre Showers was awarded the Bonomo Spirit Award, given to the athlete who is the spirit of the team and has an amazing influence on her teammates. After a stellar sophomore season and great start to her junior campaign, Showers suffered a season-ending injury for the second time in her collegiate career. Despite once again being forced to watch from the sidelines, Showers made it her mission to contribute in ways other than on the competition equipment.

Jordan Draper received the Dave Richardson Citizenship Award, named after the late husband of OU's athletic trainer, Jenn Richardson. Dave passed away in Feb. 2019 to cancer and the team dedicated their season and national championship to him. Draper is the first gymnast to receive this award, given to the gymnast with a larger-than-life personality, who is always willing to help anyone, and truly exemplifies what it means to live life to the fullest.

Alex Marks was named the recipient of the Obstacle in the Way Award. Marks battled multiple obstacles in 2019, from hip surgery in the summer to having multiple cysts removed during season. Marks missed just one meet during the 2019 season as she dealt with her injuries and was a staple in the bar lineup.
