Suzuki Heads to Pan Am Games with Team USA

NORMAN – University of Oklahoma graduate Genki Suzuki is set to represent Team USA at the 2019 Pan American Games this weekend in Lima, Peru.

Suzuki is a member of the five-man team that will compete at the 18th installment of the Pan Am Games. The men's gymnastics competition will begin Sunday with the team competition and run until Wednesday, July 31 with the individual event finals being held Monday through Wednesday.

"This is the Pan American Games, so it's a bigger deal than the other few international meets I've been to," said Suzuki. "I can't dwell on that, though. It's another competition that I get to perform for Team USA. I'm pretty excited and I'm just going to take it event-by-event and do my job out there."

The five-time OU All-American, Suzuki, is joined in Peru by fellow U.S. team members Cameron Bock (Michigan), Grant Breckenridge (Stanford), Brody Malone (Stanford) and Robert Neff (Stanford).

At last year's Pan American Championships in Peru, the U.S. men's team that featured Suzuki and fellow alum Kanji Oyama and current sophomore Spencer Goodell, won the team gold medal while Suzuki took home gold on pommel horse and finished fourth in the all-around.

OU head coach Mark Williams credits last year's Pan Am Championships in helping Suzuki be prepared for this summer's Games.

"I hope that their team has a good enough competition that they can finish in the top three and medal as a team," said Williams. "I think Genki is very capable to be on three events for the team competition and possibly qualify into an individual event final.

"I certainly think it was good for him to experience the Pan Am Championships last year, basically in the same location, so he should be very prepared for this competition."
