Wiles Selected in Eighth Round of MLB Draft

NORMAN — Oklahoma baseball junior Nathan Wiles was selected in the eighth round of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.Ā 

The right-handed pitcher from Overland Park, Kan., was taken with the 248th overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays. Wiles, the first Sooner selected in the 2019 MLB Draft, led OU with eight wins and 94.0 innings pitched this season. He struck out 83 batters, walked just 18 and posted an 8-4 record and 4.40 ERA in 15 starts.Ā 

For his career, Wiles made 51 appearances and 37 starts and compiled 230.0 innings, 191 strikeouts, just 51 walks and a 19-11 record. His 37 career starts tie for fifth-most at Oklahoma in the Big 12 era.

A total of 273 players have been drafted into Major League Baseball out of Oklahoma since 1967 and at least one player has been drafted every year since 1970.Ā
