Sooners Take Second at Big 12 Championship

NORMAN — The Oklahoma rowing team took second place at the 2019 Big 12 Championship, held on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The No. 20 Sooners totaled 106 points in the Big 12 team standings behind fourth-ranked Texas' 137 points. Kansas State (91), Kansas (82) and West Virginia (6) rounded out the standings.
In addition, four Sooners were named to the All-Big 12 Team: senior Kalie Heffernan, junior Katie Denney and sophomores Breah McKay and Maria Pergouli.
The Sooners claimed two silver-medal placings, a bronze and two fourth-place finishes on the day.
In the first race of the day, the 3V4 exhibition, the Sooners' 3V4 boat crossed the finish line in 7:57.278 to place fourth.
The Oklahoma 3V8 clocked in at 6:58.102 to place third, finishing less than two seconds behind second-place Alabama. The Sooners then took second in their next race, finishing in 7:33.659 in the 2V4 contest.
Oklahoma's 1V4 placed fourth with a time of 7:44.624, finishing behind Texas, Alabama and Kansas State, respectively.
OU's second varsity eight boat finished fourth in 6:54.214 in a tight 2V8 final behind respective boats Texas, Kansas State and Alabama. The margin between second and fourth place was less than three seconds.
The 1V8 boat closed out the Sooners' day strong with another second-place finish (6:40.582), crossing ahead of Alabama, Kansas, Tennessee, Kansas State and West Virginia.
In the automatic-qualifying scores, Texas claimed first with 42 points, followed by affiliate member Alabama with 31 points. OU was one point shy of Alabama in AQ points with 30, while K-State (23), Kansas (20), Tennessee (16) and West Virginia (6) rounded out the AQ standings.
With Texas earning the automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA Championships, the Sooners would need to be selected as an at-large team, which will be announced later this week.
