WICHITA, Kansas – In a match that came down to the wire, the No. 31 Oklahoma women's tennis team bested Wichita State 4-3 Saturday to open the weekend with a victory.
With the match tied at 3-all, junior Oleksandra Korashvili clinched the 4-3 decision at the top spot in singles. No. 23 Korashvili held on for a three-set victory over No. 106 Fatima Bizhukova, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Sooners opened the match with the doubles point. Jasmine Asghar and Ivana Corley routed No. 26 Bizhukova and Marta Bellucco 6-2 at the top spot, good for the duo's first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Camila Romero and Martina Capurro sealed the point for the Sooners with a 6-1 victory over Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva and Esther Thebault on court two to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
When play was halted, Kianah Motosono and Oleksandra Korashvili trailed Ting-Ya Hsu and Linwei Kong 5-2 on court three.
In singles, the Shockers tied the match at 1-all when Asghar was defeated by Thebult 6-1, 6-1 on court three.
Romero grabbed OU's first singles win to give the Sooners a 2-1 lead, downing Saidhujaeva at the No. 4 line. Romero gave up just one game in each set for a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Just moments later, Capurro pushed OU's advantage to 3-1 when she made quick work of Sandra Honigova 6-2, 6-2 on court two.
Wichita State answered with wins on courts five and six to tie the contest at 3-3. Motosono was defeated by Alexandra Lazarova 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 5 line, while Corley fell to Hsu 6-2, 6-1 at the six spot.
The match came down to court one, where Korashvili prevailed. After dropping set one to Bizhukova 6-3, the junior surged back to take the second 6-2 and force a deciding frame. In the final set, Korashvili took a 2-0 lead before Bizhukova tied it at 2-all. Korashvili won the next four games to close out her court, and the match, for OU.
The victory was good for Korashvili's 15th this season and her seventh win over a ranked opponent. The contest also marked the fourth time this season the Odessa, Ukraine, native has clinched a match for the Sooners.
The Sooners return to the court tomorrow for a Bedlam matchup at Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. CT. Live stats and video will be provided for the match
