NORMAN – Third baseman Brylie Ware drove a single to left center field scoring left fielder Diego Muniz in the bottom of the ninth to give the Oklahoma baseball team a 7-6 win over No. 23 TCU Friday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Ware's game-winning single came after TCU tied the game 6-all in the top of the ninth on a solo home run. He also drove in the first run of the game to start a four-run first inning for the Sooners (23-8, 5-2 Big 12). Muniz finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Ware was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Shortstop Brandon Zaragoza went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

“We needed to do that,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “We needed to do that for our team, and it was a really good team win.”

Oklahoma jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of four singles and two miscues by the Horned Frogs on sacrifice bunt attempts. Ware, Zaragoza and first baseman Tyler Hardman each singled home a run and designated hitter Brady Lindsly drove in a run on a fielder's choice.

TCU (18-10, 3-4 Big 12) cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth inning on RBI singles by catcher Alex Isola, designated hitter Bobby Goodloe and right fielder Hunter Wolfe. The Sooners responded with a run in the bottom half on an RBI double by Muniz that plated Zaragoza.

In both the fourth and fifth innings, OU responded to TCU scoring with a run in the bottom half. After the Frogs cut it to 5-4 in the fifth, Zaragoza doubled home Hardman to extend the lead to 6-4. A solo home run in the sixth by Wolfe and a homer in the top of the ninth by center fielder Johnny Rizer tied the game at 6-all.

Muniz led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and second baseman Conor McKenna beat a sacrifice bunt attempt to first for a single. Ware then drove an 0-2 pitch into the left center field gap as Muniz raced home from second with the winning run.

“When you're little, you dream of being in that type of situation and making the play,” Ware said. “After I got down 0-2, I looked at the dugout and saw all of our players up on the fence, saying 'Let's go Brylie. Let's go Brylie.' That's what gave me the confidence.”

Ware and Muniz had big nights on defense as well. Ware made a diving catch on a line drive toward the bag in the eighth inning with two runners on and two outs in a 6-5 game, saving at least one run. Muniz crashed into the wall in the fourth inning to make a leaping catch for the second out of the frame.

Jason Ruffcorn (1-1) earned the win in relief for OU while reliever Jake Eissler (3-3) took the loss for TCU. OU starter Cade Cavalli went 5.0 innings allowing eight hits, four runs and posting five strikeouts. TCU starter Nick Lodolo went 5.1 innings allowing six runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.

The Sooners and Horned Frogs continue the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Park. Former OU baseball player and 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at approximately 1:50 p.m.
