MINNEAPOLIS – The Oklahoma baseball team dropped its series opener at Minnesota 8-1 Friday evening at Siebert Field.

The Sooners (25-14), which totaled five hits, scored in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI groundout by junior shortstop Brandon Zaragoza. The Golden Gophers (17-18) scored four runs in the first inning and three runs in the fifth before adding a run in the eighth.

Oklahoma will look to rebound and even the series Saturday when the teams meet at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Sophomore first baseman Tyler Hardman was hit by a pitch to start the ninth inning and moved around to score on the grounder by Zaragoza. Senior Blake Brewster set up the run with a pinch hit single.

Zaragoza and senior third baseman Brylie Ware extended their hitting streaks to six games. Ware drilled a base hit to center in the sixth and Zaragoza singled up the middle in the seventh. Sophomore catcher Justin Mitchell knocked a base hit in the second inning and center fielder Tanner Tredaway beat out an infield single in the fifth.

A three-run home run in the first inning by third baseman Jack Wassel followed an RBI single by catcher Eli Wilson and gave Minnesota a 4-0 lead. A pair of errors and an RBI double by Wilson plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Second baseman Riley Smith hit a solo home run in the eighth to make the score 8-0.

OU starter Cade Cavalli (5-1) went 4.0 innings in the loss. Sophomore Aaron Brooks pitched a season-long 2.1 relief innings and retired six of the seven batters he faced. Sam Thoresen (3-3) went 5.0 innings in the start and earned the win for the Golden Gophers while Jake Stevenson pitched 4.0 innings and earned a save.
