HOUSTON – The Oklahoma baseball team dropped its series opener at Rice 8-1 Friday evening at Reckling Park.

Junior center fielder Brady Harlan went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Sooners (11-3). His single up the middle in the fifth inning scored junior second baseman Conor McKenna to make the score 5-1.

“On the road when you get into a different environment, things change and you have to slow yourself down, take it pitch to pitch and really calm yourself down,” Oklahoma head coach Skip Johnson said. “I've always said the obstacle in baseball, which gives you an opportunity, is if you can be in control of yourself one pitch at a time. That wasn't the case tonight.”

For the first time this season, sophomore Cade Cavalli did not pitch into the fifth inning, and his outing lasted fewer than six innings for the first time since opening weekend. He allowed four earned runs in 3.2 innings and took the loss.

The Owls (7-8) scored a run in each of the first two innings, then plated three in the fourth and added three more runs in their final three at bats. Starter Matt Canterino (1-2) went 6.0 innings in the win.

OU and Rice continue the series at 2 p.m. Saturday.
