NORMAN – For the third time this season, a trio of Oklahoma gymnasts earned Big 12 weekly awards, the conference announced Monday.
Olivia Trautman (Gymnast of the Week), Jade Degouveia (Event Specialist of the Week) and Karrie Thomas (Co-Newcomer of the Week) were recognized by the league for being instrumental to the Sooners' victory over No. 2 Florida on Friday. It's the fourth career honor for Trautman and Degouveia and second for Thomas.
Trautman had a career day against No. 2 Florida, posting the second-highest score in the nation in the all-around with a career-high 39.725. The freshman competed in the all-around for the first time in her career and set or tied a career high on all four events en route to her incredible score. Trautman finished with five career and season highs (all four events, all-around), three event titles (vault, floor, all-around) and received at least a 9.9 or better on three of four events.
Starting on vault, Trautman won the event title with a 9.950, a career high. Competing bars for the first time, the freshman posted a season and career-high 9.875 to help the Sooners to a program-record 49.725 on the event. Leading off beam, she set yet another career-high with a 9.925. The Champlin, Minn., native once again took home the floor title – her fifth of the season on the event – with a career-high 9.975 in the anchor spot.
Degouveia was honored as the Event Specialist of the Week for the second time this season and third in her career. The junior was essential to the Sooners' victory over No. 2 Florida on Friday as she tallied a career-high 9.975 on floor to take home a share of the event title. She was one of three gymnasts to earn a 9.975 on floor to help OU to a program-record 49.825 on the event. Degouveia was also one of six 10.0 start values in the vault lineup as the Sooners once again sent up an entire lineup of 10.0 start values. The junior posted a 9.9 in the No. 3 spot to help OU to an impressive 49.575 on the event.
Thomas was named the Co-Newcomer of the Week along with Denver's Alexandria Ruiz. Thomas was an integral part of a bar lineup that set a program record with a 49.725. In competition, OU beat UF head-to-head on bars with a 49.725-49.675 advantage. Thomas was crucial to this as she posted a career-high 9.925 on the event in the No. 3 spot. The Sooners counted five scores of 9.9 or better thanks to Thomas' career high.
Up next for the Sooners is a conference battle with No. 7 Denver. The meet is slated for Sunday, March 10, at 3 p.m. CT at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo.
