KEY NOTES OF WEEK

  • After its three-game sweep of Cal Poly on opening weekend, Oklahoma is 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 2013. The Sooners outscored the Mustangs 18-6 in the series.
  • The Oklahoma pitching staff held Cal Poly to six runs while scattering 25 hits and striking out 20 batters in the series. The three starters – sophomore Cade Cavalli, junior Nathan Wiles and sophomore Levi Prater – allowed just four earned runs in 17.2 innings, and the bullpen – comprised of freshman Jaret Godman, freshman Wyatt Olds, junior Jason Ruffcorn, sophomore Aaron Brooks and sophomore Zack Matthews – was even better, allowing just one run in 9.1 innings of work.

  • The Sooners collected 23 hits and 16 walks in scoring 18 runs in the series. Eleven of the 23 hits (nine doubles and two triples) went for extra bases.

  • Ten different Sooners collected at least one hit while eight players had two or more hits. A total of 10 players drove in a run while nine different players scored a run.

  • Infielders Conor McKenna, Brylie Ware and Brandon Zaragoza combined for 40 fielding assists and 11 putouts. The Sooners turned three double plays, including two of the 6-3 variety by Zaragoza.

  • Seven players made their OU debut this weekend: Godman, Olds, Ruffcorn, junior transfer Conor McKenna, sophomore transfers Tanner Tredaway and Jordan Vujovich and freshman Milan Walla. Walla recorded his first career hit in his initial at bat on Friday.

 

TOP PLAYER PERFORMANCES

Nathan Wiles

Pitched 7.0 innings in his Saturday start, scattering nine hits, one walk and two earned runs to lead Oklahoma to the series-clinching victory.

 

Levi Prater

Tossed 6.1 innings with five strikeouts, allowing just three hits and one walk Sunday, as the Sooners completed the weekend sweep.

 

Jason Ruffcorn

Earned two saves in his first two appearances for Oklahoma over the weekend, striking out three batters in 2.1 innings of work. He pitched the ninth inning in Friday's season-opening 4-1 win, and then tossed the final 1.1 frames of the series finale on Sunday to complete the sweep.

 

Brady Lindsly

The junior catcher led OU with a .333 batting average (3 for 9) with two doubles, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored. He slugged .556 and put up a .500 on-base percentage. He also threw out the only Cal Poly baserunner trying to steal in the series, firing a strike well ahead of the runner with Prater on the mound Sunday.

 

Brandon Zaragoza

In addition to his four putouts and 11 fielding assists, the junior shortstop recorded two hits and five walks, scoring three runs and driving in two more runs. He compiled a .615 on-base percentage in the series.

 

Conor McKenna

The junior second baseman doubled for two of his three hits, drove home three runs and scored twice in the series. He also recorded the lone stolen base of the weekend.
