Sooners Strong in Preseason Scrimmage

December 07, 2019 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team held its annual intrasquad scrimmage Saturday afternoon inside the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center. The meet was the first time the 2020 Sooners performed their new routines in front of fans and judges in preparation for the upcoming season.

"I think we did a good job, performance-wise we had a pretty high hit percentage," said OU head coach Mark Williams. "I was really pleased with that. The energy of the team, the competitiveness between the red and white teams was amazing."

Competing in front of a panel of judges, Oklahoma sent up gymnasts on all six events. The Sooners welcome plenty of new faces to the 2020 squad, including nine freshmen or newcomers.

In the four-up, three-count format, the white squad edged the red team by a final tally of 241.750 to 241.700.

"I think it's a great starting point for us," continued Williams. "We certainly need to improve on some things but for it being the start of the season, I've seen some red-white meets that were far worse than this one. Overall, I was happy with their effort today."

Oklahoma kicks off its 2020 campaign in Colorado Springs, Colo. with the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 11. The home opener is set for Saturday, Feb. 8 against Iowa.
