December 16, 2019 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN – OU wraps up the non-conference home slate Tuesday when it hosts Drake. The game will tip at 7 p.m. CT on Fox Sports Oklahoma.

ON THE AIR

The contest will air on KREF 99.3 FM/1400 AM in Norman and KOKC 1520 AM in Oklahoma City (Tune In Radio App) with Brian Brinkley on the call.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

•  The Sooners got a dominant win over Sam Houston State in their last outing, topping the Bearkats 95-71 Sunday inside Lloyd Noble Center. Four #Sooners scored in double figures as Taylor Robertson led the way with 21; Ana Llanusa poured in 19; Maddi Williams had 16 and 10 rebounds for a double-double; and Gabby Gregory had 11. Tatum Veitenheimer did it all, posting six assists, six steals and four rebounds in addition to six points.

•  Taylor Robertson has become the NCAA's active career leader in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 47.4% (156-for-328), just 10 games into her second season of college basketball. Robertson is the youngest member of the 10-player list; the nine other players are juniors and seniors.

• Three Big 12 players have had 30-point performances this season and two of them are Sooners. Llanusa was the first league player to achieve the feat when she dropped 30 against Missouri State on Nov. 14, while Robertson recorded 30 at Wichita State on Nov. 30.

• Averaging 19.4 points per game, Robertson ranks second in the Big 12 in scoring. Llanusa is third at 19.2 points per game. OU is one of just three teams in the league to have two players averaging 15 or more points per game and is the only team to have two players averaging 18 or more.

• OU leads the Big 12 from beyond the arc, sitting atop the league's rankings for made 3s (88), 3-point field goal percentage (.393) and 3-point attempts (224).

RECAPPING A WIN OVER SAM HOUSTON STATE

Four Sooners poured in points in double figures and Madi Williams had a double-double as the Sooners bounced Sam Houston State 95-71 Sunday inside Lloyd Noble Center.

Robertson once again led the squad with 21, marking her sixth 20-point game this season. Robertson drained her 50th trey of the season during the third quarter and finished 4-for-7 from behind the arc.

Llanusa was right behind with 19 to go with six rebounds, three assists and a steal. Williams' double-double – her fourth this season – included 16 points and 10 boards. Freshman Gabby Gregory poured in 11 points and was perfect from the charity stripe, going 7-for-7.

Veitenheimer had a stuff stat sheet as she posted six assists, six steals and six points to go with four rebounds. Mandy Simpson pulled down nine boards and dished four assists in the effort.
Freshman Liz Scott made her first appearance for the Sooners and scored her first collegiate bucket just seconds after taking the floor to start the fourth quarter. Scott finished with four points.

TOP OF THE LEAGUE

Robertson is averaging 19.4 points per game and Llanusa is averaging 19.2 to rank second and third in the Big 12 in scoring, respectively.

Oklahoma is one of three schools in the conference to have two players averaging 15 points or more; Oklahoma State's Vivian Gray (18.78 PPG) and Natasha Mack (15.56 PPG) and Texas Tech's Brittany Brewer (17.43) and Alexis Tucker (16.00) are the only other duos to do so. OU is the only school with two players averaging more than 18 points per game.

Llanusa and Robertson are two of three Big 12 players to have 30-point outings this season, with Llanusa dropping 30 against Missouri State (Nov. 14) and Robertson scoring 30 at Wichita State (Nov. 30). Iowa State's Ashley Joens is the only other player to score 30+, tallying 20 (Nov. 11) and 41 (Dec. 15).

T-ROB TREY TRACKER

Sophomore guard Robertson has become the NCAA's active career leader in 3-point field goal percentage as she has shot 47.4% (156-for-328), just 10 games into her second season of college basketball. Robertson is the youngest member of the 10-player list, which is comprised of juniors and seniors (including 2019 Wooden Award Winner Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon, a senior who ranks seventh on the list). Robertson is shooting 49.5% (51-for-103) from deep this season.

Robertson also sits atop the national rankings for both made 3s (51) and 3s per game (5.22) this season. She is averaging the most 3s per game of any player in men's or women's Division I basketball; Dru Kuxhausen of McNeese is the men's 3s per game leader and is averaging 4.20. Robertson is also averaging more 3s per game and a better 3-point field goal percentage (49.5%) than the leading NBA player; James Harden (Houston) accounts for 5.0 per game and is shooting 36.1% from deep.

Robertson leads the Big 12 in 3-pointers this season (47), almost double than the next closest player; Christianna Carr of Kansas State has hit 24).

As a team, OU has hit 88 3-pointers this season; Robertson accounts for more than half of those. Robertson has made more treys than 158 teams in DI women's basketball this season.
Of Robertson's 194 total points this season, 153 have come from behind the 3-point line (Robertson is 51-for-103 from deep this season). 21 have come from the charity stripe, where she is 21-for-26 (80.8%); just 20 of Robertson's points have not been 3s or free throws.

Additionally, Robertson's nine made 3s at Wichita State tie for the most in a single game in women's Division I basketball this season and are one shy of the men's 2019-20 Division I single game record of 10.

SHOOTERS SHOOT

OU leads the Big 12 from beyond the arc, sitting atop the league's rankings for made 3s (88), 3-point field goal percentage (.393) and 3-point attempts (224). The Sooners lead the conference in made treys by 24; the next closest team is Iowa State with 64 on a .318 clip.

Oklahoma is tied for 18th nationally in 3s per game with 9.0 and ranks fifth in the Power Five in the same category. OU ranks second in scoring offense in the Big 12 as it averages 81.90 points per game. Baylor leads the conference with 86.00, but the Sooners have scored more points than any other team in the league with 819.

The Sooners are the only squad in the Big 12 to have players combine for 10 or more 20-point performances this season: Robertson has had six; Llanusa, four; and Madi Williams, one.

PREVIEWING DRAKE

The Bulldogs enter Tuesday's contest at 7-2 overall. The game with the Sooners will be Drake's first in 12 days; the squad last played on Dec. 5 when it bested Waldorf 103-18.

In that contest, Drake limited Waldorf to 18 points, the fewest scored by an opponent in school history. Becca Hittner, Sarah Beth Gueldner and Maggie Negaard led the Bulldogs with 15 points each. Hittner had three blocks; Gueldner hit five three-pointers; and Negaard dished eight assists. Sara Rhine was the other Bulldog in double figures with 14 points to go with six rebounds. The team tallied 33 assists to tie for the third-most in a NCAA Division I game this season.

Two Drake players are averaging 15 or more points per game: Rhine accounts for 18.8 and a team-high 6.1 rebounds per contest and Hittner averages 15.7 to go with 5.8 rebounds.

The Bulldogs' only losses this season have come away from Des Moines at hands of South Dakota (102-94 in Vermillion, S.D.) and Purdue (667-47 in Estero, Fla.). Tuesday's matchup will be just their second true road game of the season.

Drake owns the all-time series 3-0. The last time the teams met was Nov. 25, 1996 in Norman with the Bulldogs prevailing 77-64.

QUICK HITS

  • Drake's Becca Hittner was the 2019 Jackie Stiles Missouri Valley Player of the Year; the award is named for current OU assistant coach Jackie Stiles, who spent her prolific collegiate career at Missouri State of the Missouri Valley Conference.

  • The Sooners will be tested early and often during their 14-game non-conference schedule. OU's non-conference slate features at least seven matchups with teams that appeared in the postseason a year ago including three NCAA Tournament teams (Abilene Christian, Drake and UConn).

  • OU is the only team in the Big 12 without a senior on its roster. The Sooners will be one of two league teams (Texas Tech) that will return three players who averaged at least 10.0 points per game. Llanusa (18.3), Robertson (14.3) and Williams (11.6) all averaged scoring in double figures during the 2018-19 season.

  • Assistant coach Stiles was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 2016 in the same class as head coach Sherri Coale. Oklahoma joins Connecticut as the only Division I women's basketball programs with two WBHOF inductees on their coaching staff.

UP NEXT

The Sooners travel to UConn on Sunday, Dec. 22 to close out the non-conference slate with the Huskies. The contest is part of the Holiday Hoops Showcase inside Mohegan Sun Arena and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
