OU Announces Marquee Home-and-Home with Utah

December 12, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma women's gymnastics team announced Thursday that it has scheduled a home-and-home series with Utah for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The Sooners will host the Utes in 2021 with a return trip to Salt Lake City in 2022.

"We are thrilled to increase the strength of our schedule by committing to a four-year contract with the powerhouse gymnastics program at The University of Utah," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "We have been pursuing an agreement with Utah for over a decade and are excited to finally make it happen!"

The two teams have combined for 14 national championships and are two of just six teams to ever claim a national title.

"We have always had the mentality that the best way to prepare a team for postseason is to compete against the best during the regular season," Kindler said. "The electric atmosphere the fans provide in the Huntsman Center is an environment we definitely want to be a part of."

Oklahoma and Utah have met 40 times in program history with OU winning the most recent meeting at the 2018 NCAA Championships. OU has won the last five meetings, all of which have come in postseason competition. The teams have met just eight times in the regular season with the last meeting coming in 1992. Utah is 7-1 against the Sooners in regular season competition.

OU has won four of the last six National Championships and finished in the top three in each of the last seven years. The Sooners have claimed 17 conference titles and 11 regional championships, while making 19 NCAA Championship appearances. OU also boasts 14 national champions and 149 All-Americans.

Since the arrival of Kindler in 2007, the Sooners have emerged as one of the preeminent women's gymnastics programs in the country. After a 10th place finish in 2009, Kindler's 2010 squad soared to new heights and finished as the NCAA Runner-Up. Over the next 10 seasons, the Sooners would finish in the top three in all but one season. OU secured its first national title in 2014, before winning back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017 and again in 2019. Kindler is currently the only active head coach to have led a program to a national title.

A member of the Pac-12 Conference, Utah boasts one of the strongest gymnastics traditions with 10 national championships (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1990, 1992, 1994 and 1995), 11 conference championships, 21 NCAA Finals appearances, 27 individual national champions and 373 All-Americans.

In 21 NCAA Finals appearances, Utah has finished in the top three 11 times. In 2015, the Utes edged out the defending champion Sooners to take second place. Utah leads the nation with 38 NCAA Championship appearances. The Utes have also claimed the top attendance record in women's gymnastics, setting an NCAA record in 2017 with an average of 15,244.

Utah will be one of many prestigious programs to make the trek to Lloyd Noble Center in recent years. In 2019, the Sooners hosted Florida, UCLA, Georgia and Alabama. Combined the five teams had won the last 24 NCAA Championships. When No. 2 UCLA came to Norman, the Sooners set an attendance record, topping 10,000 people in the LNC. In 2020, preseason No. 6 Michigan and No. 7 Denver will travel to the LNC to take on the Sooners continuing a streak of top 10 matchups.

The Sooners will open the 2020 season at the Collegiate Challenge in Anaheim, Calif., where they will face No. 4 UCLA, No. 9 California and No. 22 Stanford. The home slate opens on Jan. 20 at 1:30 p.m. CT. against No. 19 Arkansas at Lloyd Noble Center.

Season tickets for the 2020 season are currently available for purchase. Tickets are available for $40 for general admission and $60 for reserved seating, which will reserve a seat location for the entire season. Youth (6-18) and senior (55+) season tickets will be $30. Discounted tickets are available for $5 for groups of 10 or more. Group tickets must be purchased at least 24 hours prior to the event.
