NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team checked in at No. 2 in the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Preseason Coaches Poll, released Monday afternoon.
Coming off a runner-up finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships, the Sooners received 420 points and two first-place votes in the 2020 poll. Stanford led the poll, receiving 457 points and 17 first-place votes. Michigan sits at third with 404 points while Illinois came in at No. 4 with 383 points. Nebraska, who finished third at last year's NCAAs, secured the fifth spot with 377 points. This season marks the first time in six years that OU hasn't topped the preseason CGA poll.
The eight-time defending MPSF conference champion Sooners return nine gymnasts from the 2019 squad, including All-American sophomore Vitaliy Guimaraes and conference champion on floor exercise in 2019, junior Gage Dyer.
The Sooners will start the year at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. (Jan. 11) then travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on No. 9 Ohio State and No. 14 Arizona State (Jan. 18). Oklahoma will conclude their three-meet road trip at No. 1 Stanford (Jan. 25).
The Sooners host No. 8 Iowa (Feb. 8) in the home season opener then will hit the road to face No. 3 Michigan (Feb. 15). The 2020 squad will return to McCasland Field House to host No. 13 Air Force (March 13) and No. 11 California (March 21).
OU will look to earn its ninth straight MPSF conference championship in Colorado Springs, Colo., on April 4. The 2020 NCAA Championships will be held in Ann Arbor, Mich., on April 17 and 18.
