Van Wicklen Concludes Cottbus World Cup

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics alumnus Colin Van Wicklen concluded his time in Cottbus, Germany, on Sunday at the 2019 Cottbus World Cup. 

Van Wicklen had a solid showing at the meet, an opportunity for gymnasts to earn individual points toward Olympic qualification via the World Cup series. The 2017 OU graduate qualified for three event finals this weekend, finishing just .133 shy of a medal on high bar in fourth place (14.033) and put up seventh- and eighth-place performances on floor (13.333) and vault (13.783), respectively. 

"Overall, I'm extremely proud of my performance this week in Cottbus," said Van Wicklen following the meet. "Making three event finals is an amazing accomplishment. Getting so close to the podium and coming away with a fourth place finish on high bar is definitely disappointing but also extremely motivating."

The U.S. senior men's national team member advanced to the floor exercise final with a 14.300 routine on Thursday morning that was sixth-best out of the preliminary. His two-vault average of 14.549 in Friday's qualifications was good for third-place entering finals. Van Wicklen put up a sixth-place 13.800 on high bar in the qualifying round to advance to finals and just missed a fourth final on parallel bars, finishing 10th in prelims with a 13.900 score. 

The three finals qualifications for Van Wicklen is the most by a U.S. male on the World Cup circuit this year. 

"I'm ready to get back in the gym and continue working hard for 2020," concluded Van Wicklen. "It was an absolute honor representing Team USA this week."

The Olympic Channel will air replays of the meet's two days of finals on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. CT (Day Two) and Monday evening at 5 p.m. CT (Day One).
