Sooners Take Five-Set Thriller Against Texas Tech

November 13, 2019 | Volleyball

NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team rallied to take down Texas tech in five sets to sweep the conference series against the Red Raiders on Wednesday Night inside McCasland Field House.

After the Red Raiders won the first set 27-25, the Sooners responded with a 25-18 win in the second. Texas Tech once again took the advantage, winning the third 25-22, but Oklahoma held on to win set four 25-16 and set five 15-11.

"It is November, it is a grind," head coach Lindsey Gray-Walton said. "It is two mental to the one physical. There is no doubt in the will, desire and want right now. What is your best effort tonight? We need that throughout. We can't have that rollercoaster. Whatever your best is, do your job as best as you can. We were able to see that. We tried some different things tonight in terms of flipping our L1 and L2. I know that was an adjustment. We tried to be cognizant of that with them and say 'hey I understand this is different, this is new but it is still volleyball. It is still pass, set, hit'. Once we could settle, we know and get it. We just need to find a way. People are going to give you their best game. If it is the last time you are going to play until next year, they are going to give you their best."

In set one, the Sooners jumped out to a 12-7 lead early on, but the Red Raiders would tie things up at 15-all. The teams traded points back-and-forth through the final half of the set, with Tech using a 4-1 run to end the set with a 27-25 victory.

OU would even up the match in the second set with a 25-18 advantage. The Sooners pushed their lead to 11-5 early on, never letting the Red Raiders within more than three points the whole set. After Tech made it a 22-18 game, the Sooners would rattle off three straight points, including kills from Paige Anderson and Ashlynn Dunbar to take the set.

The third set opened with back-and-forth play, sitting at a tie at 11-11. However, the Red Raiders took an 18-14 lead and forced an OU timeout. Although a block from Sanaa Dotson and Brianna Kadiku brought the Sooners within two at 22-20, the Red Raiders held on to take the third, 25-22.

Down two sets, the Sooners rallied to take the victory with back-to-back set wins. At 10-8, OU went on a three-point run that included kills from Kadiku and Dotson and a block from Sarah Sanders and Paige Anderson.

After Texas Tech called timeout and scored once, the Sooners went on a four-point run to lead 17-9. Although the two teams would exchange points for the remainder of the set, the Sooners' advantage was too great for the Red Raiders as OU won 25-16 to force a fifth set.

After the Red Raiders took a 4-3 advantage in the final frame, OU used a five-point run to lead by four heading into the changeover. That run included kills from Sanders and Dotson as well as two service aces from Aysia Harty.

Although Texas Tech came within two at 13-11, OU closed out the home win with a kill from Sanders and a block from Kadiku and Sanders.

The Sooners are back in action on Friday at Iowa State. That match is set for a 6:30 p.m. CT start.

"You create your own destiny," Gray-Walton said. "There should be no pressure because you have worked really hard to be in this moment where you get to be in driver seat and control what happens next. All of these next four matches, the most important being Iowa State, you can be the victor if you assert yourself in our identity early and often. We have to take a road warrior mentality. Hilton is a hard place to play, Ames is a faithful fanbase. I know Iowa State wants a cleaner match out of their players than what they did here. For us, it is time to get physically recovered but mentally reboot against a good Iowa State team. The most important day is tomorrow and then the most important day after that is Friday. If we start to look ahead, we are going to start quickly looking around like 'oh no, what happened?' It is just the task at hand."
