Baseball Announces Stellar Early Signing Class

November 13, 2019 | Baseball

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma head baseball coach Skip Johnson announced the signing of nine high school seniors and four junior college transfers on Wednesday, Nov. 13, the first day of the November early signing period.

The new class of Sooners for the fall of 2020 is comprised of eight pitchers (Nicholas Andrews, Carson Atwood, Dalton Fowler, Dax Fulton, Tommy Lamb, Hunter Marshall, Dawson Sweatt and Carson Thomas), two catchers (Jimmy Crooks and Hudson Polk), three infielders (Ed Howard, Fulton, Polk) and two outfielders (Jace Bohrofen and Brett Squires). In December, right-handed pitcher and infielder Cade Horton signed with OU. With the addition of Horton, six members of the signing class are from Oklahoma and four hail from Texas while Georgia, Illinois, Tennessee and Wisconsin each have one representative.

"The 2020 signing class has been a culmination of a lot of hard work by our entire staff, led by recruiting coordinator Clay Overcash and assistant coach Clay Van Hook," Johnson said. "We have recruited some of these guys since they were 14 or 15 years old, and it's nice to be able to officially welcome them to the Sooner family. We were able to sign some of the top players from the state of Oklahoma who are also some of the top prospects in the nation."

Of the 14 members of the early signing class, eight are ranked among the top 20 prospects in their respective states (10 among the top 60) and 10 are rated among the top 400 players in the nation (seven among the top 100), according to Prep Baseball Report. Baseball America ranked OU's early signing class No. 7 nationally on Nov. 13.

"We addressed several of our future needs with this top-10 rated class," the third-year OU skipper said. "It should help us maintain a high level of play for the foreseeable future and put us in a position to compete for a chance to go to Omaha."
