Manek Named to Malone Award Watch List

NORMAN – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday that Oklahoma junior forward Brady Manek is one of 20 players named to its watch list for the 2020 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.
Named after two-time NBA MVP Karl Malone, the annual honor recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
Manek is one of only two Big 12 players (Baylor's Tristan Clark) named to the watch list.
One of three returning OU starters, Manek was an All-Big 12 honorable mention selection in 2018-19. Starting in all 34 games, he averaged 12.2 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting .469 from the field and .358 from behind the arc.
He enters his junior year as the Sooners' leading returning scorer. With 741 career points to his name, he is just the 10th player in OU history to reach 700 career points by the end of a sophomore season.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 by mid-February. In March, five finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2020 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, Calif., on Friday, April 10, 2020.
Previous winners of the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award include Zion Williamson (2019), Deandre Ayton (2018), Johnathan Motley (2017), Georges Niang (2016) and Montrezl Harrell (2015).
Manek is the second Sooner to receive a preseason honor in as many days. On Wednesday, senior forward Kristian Doolittle was named an honorable mention selection for the Preseason All-Big 12 Team.
