NORMAN — In its first home matches of the season, the Oklahoma volleyball team tallied a pair of wins to open the OU Nike Invitational at McCasland Field House on Friday. The Sooners swept Northwestern State 3-0 before battling in a dramatic 3-2 win over Texas A&M.
The Sooners opened the tournament with a straight-set victory over Northwestern State: 25-11, 25-17, 25-15.
Oklahoma out-killed the Lady Demons by a 42-26 clip, registering a .333 hitting percentage while holding NSU at .063. The Sooners also led NSU in blocks (7-3), in digs (52-46) and in assists (41-26).
Senior outside hitter Alyssa Enneking and sophomore setter Kylee McLaughlin both registered a double-double in the match as Enneking tallied 12 kills and 10 digs while McLaughlin registered 35 assists and 13 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Paige Anderson led the match with 6 kills, including one solo block. Classmate defensive specialist Keyton Kinley paced OU with 14 digs.
Although the Lady Demons opened the first set with a 3-1 advantage, Oklahoma used a 6-0 run to establish a 7-3 lead. During the run, Brianna Kadiku and Sarah Sanders both collected kills before combining on a block.
After building a 16-10 lead, the Sooners went on a seven-point run that included two kills by Sarah Maras and one by Alyssa Enneking. After the Lady Demons scored once to make it a 23-11 set, an NSU service error and a Kadiku kill sealed the 25-11 set victory for OU.
An early four-point run in the second set gave OU a 6-3 lead, an advantage that it would carry throughout the frame. McLaughlin assisted on all 15 of OU's kills in the second set, helping the Sooner offense reach a .324 hitting percentage for the period. The Sooners closed the set victory by winning four of the last six serves, including kills from Maras, Kadiku and Anderson.
Northwestern State used a timeout early in the third frame after OU built an 8-3 lead. Although the Lady Demons scored once out of the break, the Sooners went 4-0 to make it 12-4 in the third set. NSU called another timeout when OU led 18-11, but Oklahoma won seven of the last 11 points to clinch the sweep. OU's final four points came from Enneking, who closed out the period with three straight kills.
The Sooners clinched the Friday sweep with a 3-2 win over Texas A&M in the nightcap. After taking a lead with a 25-19 win in set one, the Sooners fell behind after dropping set two (25-22) and three (25-19). Oklahoma sent it to five sets with a 25-20 win in set four before clinching the comeback win with a 16-14 victory in set five.
Enneking and McLaughlin both earned double-doubles again in the second match. Enneking totaled 19 kills and 17 digs, and McLaughlin collected 42 assists and 21 digs.
Trailing 5-4 in the first set, the Sooners used a five-point run to establish a 9-5 lead thanks to kills from Enneking and Kadiku and a Sanders ace. However, the Aggies came back to tie the match at 12-12. At 15-all, Oklahoma went 4-0 on a trio of Aggie errors and a Maras kill to make it 19-15. The Sooners carried their advantage to clinch the set, sealing it with a kill from Enneking and a block by Anderson and Sanders.
The Aggies came back to take the lead in the match with a pair of set victories, 25-22 and 25-19. Nonetheless, the Sooners battled back in a competitive fourth set that saw 11 ties and five lead changes. Behind 19-20, the Sooners stunned the Aggies and scored six straight to close out the frame. During that run, Enneking and Morgan Miller both tallied a pair of kills while Miller combined with Anderson on a huge block to force a fifth set.
Texas A&M opened the fifth set 3-0, but like before, the Sooners fought back to tie it at 4-4 and take their first lead of the set at 9-8. The Aggies burned a timeout after a pair of Enneking kills made it 10-8 for OU, and Oklahoma used a break of its own with a 13-12 lead. TAMU scored twice out of the break to earn match point at 14-13, but the Sooners continued to fight. A kill from Sanders tied it at 14, and an attack error by the Aggies gave OU the advantage. Enneking crushed a huge kill to clinch the Sooner victory with a 16-14 win in set five.
The OU Nike Invitational wraps up on Saturday, beginning with a neutral-site matchup between the Lady Demons and the Aggies at 11 a.m. The Sooners will have a rematch with Texas A&M at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, which will be broadcast on SoonerSports.tv for premium subscribers.
