NORMAN — Past and present members of the University of Oklahoma gymnastics program concluded competition at the 2018 U.S. Gymnastics Championships at T.D. Garden in Boston on Saturday.
The Sooners put two on the podium in the senior-elite division all-around, led by senior Yul Moldauer (168.15) taking the silver medal and former Sooner Allan Bower (166.95) bringing home the bronze. Both were named to the 2018 U.S. Men's Senior National Team at the conclusion of the championships.
“I'm very excited that we look to have two guys making the world championships team,” said OU head coach Mark Williams. “Yul and Allan were second and third, respectively, in the all-around and they both really shined at this championship. I'm really pleased with them and with the whole program. Out of the 10 guys we had representing OU, current or former, every guy finished in the top 20 in the all-around.”
Moldauer, the 2017 U.S. all-around champion, rebounded from day one of the competition to finish in the top five in five events. Bronze medalist Bower had a solid showing across the board, with a second-place finish on the pommel horse (29.20) and fourth-place spot on floor (28.35).
OU graduate Colin Van Wicklen (163.05) placed eighth, senior Genki Suzuki (162.80) took ninth, and former Sooner Kanji Oyama (162.15) finished 10th.
Three current Sooners making their first U.S. senior nationals appearance also placed in the top 20. Junior Tanner Justus (158.65) claimed 16th, sophomore Alexei Vernyi (157.80) placed 18th and fellow sophomore Gage Dyer (157.65) came in 20th.
Competing in the junior-elite division, incoming freshmen Spencer Goodell and Vitaliy Guimaraes placed third and fourth, respectively, in the all-around.
Goodell posted an all-around score of 156.55, while Guimaraes tallied a two-day total of 156.00. Guimaraes finished as the juniors individual champion on floor and vault. Goodell tied for first on still rings. At the conclusion of the juniors' final day, Goodell was named to the 2018-19 U.S. men's junior national team.
“I'm happy for Spencer Goodell as he was named to the junior national team this afternoon," Williams said. "We had a great championship and look forward to moving into competing on the world stage with the 2018 World Championships team. We hope to represent the United States well in Doha (Qatar).”
Additionally, Williams was named 2018 Coach of the Year by U.S. Gymnastics and Moldauer claimed Athlete of the Year honors and Sportsperson of the Year co-honors.
Members of the U.S. Senior Men's National Team will compete at the 2018 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, Oct. 25-Nov. 3, with three team qualifying spots on the line to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
